Job Description:
The Director of Transportation supervises the transportation system for the county's schools and performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services and/or the Superintendent.
Qualifications:
Holds or qualifies for a West Virginia Professional Administrative Certificate Holds a valid West Virginia driver's license. Holds or willing to obtain CDL withing 1 year of being employed as Director of Transportation. Has a working knowledge of school bus transportation and motor fleet management. Has a broad knowledge of safety rules and traffic laws, regulations and ordinances governing the use and operation of motor vehicles, specifically school buses, in West Virginia. Has a broad knowledge of the county road system. Has a broad knowledge and understanding of preventive maintenance routines and operation of mechanical equipment. Has demonstrated effective supervision Has a broad knowledge and understanding of business administration and practices to include, but not limited to, budgeting, scheduling, inventory control purchasing, bidding and letter writing. Has demonstrated successful experience in record keeping and inventory control. Has demonstrated effective communication and computer skills. Has demonstrated ability to work effectively with others. Has demonstrated leadership skills.

Days Responsibilities:
The Director of Transportation shall have the following responsibilities and duties: To demonstrate leadership to enhance school/county effectiveness in areas of responsibility. To provide purpose and direction for school/county. To demonstrate cognitive skills to gather, analyze and synthesize information to reach goals. To manage group behaviors to achieve consensus. To enhance the quality of the total school/county organization. To organize and delegate to accomplish goals. To communicate effectively. To supervise and evaluate the bus operators and the supervisor of transportation/foreman/mechanics. To schedule, participate in and supervise all school bus driver training. To screen qualifications of prospective bus operators. To provide appropriate staff development for employees in area of responsibility. To establish and adjust bus routes and schedules accordingly. To supervise bus maintenance. To arbitrate and recommend student discipline related to bus incidents. To keep accurate records of mechanics supplies. To supervise the administration of drug and alcohol testing of the transportation department. To monitor road and weather conditions for deciding on school closings, early dismissals and late arrivals. To provide accurate information to and maintain effective communication with parents, bus operators, and other Board employees. To provide the Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services with regular status reports on the transportation system and garage area concerns and needs. To maintain accurate records relative to the transportation system including, but not limited to, maintenance, repair, cost, and perpetual inventory. To maintain current price lists for transportation supplies, parts, etc. To maintain and implement current procedures and practices for purchasing school buses and other transportation supplies. To maintain all county vehicles including vehicles used by school employees and in the driver education program. To submit state and county reports in a timely fashion. To maintain professional work habits. To maintain and upgrade professional skills. To perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services and/or the Superintendent.
