Job Description

Job description: The Dirt Crew Lead supervises and participates in county dirt and gravel road construction, maintenance, and repair activities. This position leads a crew responsible for grading, shaping, drainage improvements, and surface maintenance while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with county policies, safety standards, and applicable regulations. Compensation will be dependent on experience. Essential Job Functions Supervise, schedule and assign daily work activities for dirt crew employees, while communicating and coordinating with the General Foreman and Highway Superintendent. Provide on‑the‑job training, coaching, and performance feedback to crew members. Monitor work quality and productivity to ensure standards and timelines are met. Promote a safe, respectful, and professional work environment. Oversee maintenance and repair of dirt, gravel and paved roads, shoulders, ditches and drainage structures. Direct grading, blading, shaping, culvert installation, and erosion control efforts. Inspect road conditions and recommend corrective actions and materials. Respond to weather‑related issues including washouts, flooding, and snow or ice conditions (if applicable). Operate heavy equipment such as motor graders, loaders, dozers, excavators and dump trucks as needed. Ensure proper use, maintenance and care of equipment and tools. Coordinate material usage and report needs for gravel, culverts and supplies. Conduct routine inspections and report mechanical issues promptly. Enforce county, state and OSHA safety regulations and work practices. Conduct tailgate safety meetings and ensure proper use of PPE. Assist with accident reporting and incident investigations. Ensure work complies with county standards, environmental requirements and right‑of‑way regulations. Maintain daily work logs, equipment usage records and crew time reporting. Communicate clearly with supervisors, other departments, contractors and the public. Address citizen concerns professionally and refer issues as appropriate. All other duties as assigned. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in road maintenance, construction, or earthwork. Prior experience leading or supervising a work crew preferred. Valid driver's license; CDL required within a specified timeframe. Knowledge of dirt road construction and maintenance techniques. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment.
