If your career goals change while you're employed, we are here to help. Pierce Transit offers $5,000 per year (up to a total of $18,000) in Tuition Assistance after your one-year anniversary. Certifications, and career skills must be connected to a position at Pierce Transit. All of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Pierce Transit offers two Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plans to choose from, PERS2 and PERS3 , as well as a matching program for 457 deferred compensation. Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare. Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry.PAID LEAVE
Full-time Pierce Transit employees are eligible to receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 12 days of sick leave, and 12 vacation days per year. Part-time employees, receive pro-rated leave, to include sick leave, vacation, personal holiday and holiday pay. Vacation leave accrual rates increase per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Assures that Agency standards of safety, courtesy and reliability are met by daily monitoring of transit operations staff and contracted vendors for adherence to Agency policies, rules, regulations and schedules; Takes necessary corrective actions up to and including recommendations for disciplinary action. Confers with Transit Operators regarding proper safety procedures, defensive driving techniques, customer relations issues, report preparation and new or revised policies, procedures and schedules; Counsels and takes corrective action when necessary and provides written documentation. Takes charge of accident or other emergency scenes, ensuring safety and security of operators, customers and Agency equipment; Operates buses or vans when necessary; Reroutes buses or vans and adjusts headways in response to field conditions, in the field working in conjunction with the Comm. Center; Conducts on-the-scene accident investigation and documents findings. Ensures that the complete facts are determined and reported in any agency related investigation. Assists operators in courteously gaining passenger cooperation by advising customers regarding Agency policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Evaluates service changes and/or service delivery and recommends improvements to the appropriate manager. Operates portable, mobile and base station two-way radios as part of or separately from the Agency mobile relay radio system. Operates mobile communication system, Clever CAD, ORCA, and other equipment and technologies. Works with police officers to provide security to transit operators and customers. Meets with Transit Operators to evaluate service and resolve problems. Provides individual or small group training to Transit Operators; Works with the Bus Training Division in the provision of training to new and experienced Transit Operators. Identifies operators' training and support needs and coordinates provision of appropriate assistance. Carries out special projects; prepares regular and special oral and written reports; documents daily Operations activities. Has regular and predictable attendance. Performs other related duties as assignedRequired:
High School diploma or equivalent and eighteen (18) months experience in transit operations with Pierce Transit or another transportation agency.Internal Applicants:
Applicant must have performance history which demonstrates integrity, accountability, safety and responsible behaviors while employed at Pierce Transit.Desired:

Pierce, King, and Thurston County areas and roads; in-person and telephone techniques for providing service to the disabled and others with special needs; Proper English usage; Pierce Transit system, routes and fares; Operations Department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; policies and procedures specific to the Service Coordination or Specialized Transportation Divisions, whichever is applicable; Washington vehicle code and other laws and regulations governing public transportation and operation of commercial vehicles. Ability to : Plan, organize and guide the activities of others; counsel, advise, train and motivate Transit Operators regarding performance and procedures; Communicate tactfully and effectively with culturally diverse individuals at all levels and of varying socioeconomic backgrounds; Sensitively deal with elderly and physically and mentally challenged customers; Recognize problems and recommend solutions; Understand, interpret and apply contracts, laws, policies, procedures and regulations; Exercise sound judgment in stressful situations; Communicate effectively orally both individually or in small groups and in writing; Operate a computer using Windows applications and other computer software programs; pass a job related examination; Pass federally required drug and alcohol testing mandates; Drive all job related vehicles and maintain a valid WA State driver's license and/or CDL as required.Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) prior to hire and successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter. Clearance is required prior to accessing Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Employees in this classification are subject to recurring background checks conducted by JBLM. This job is considered safety sensitive, covered by the Agency's drug and alcohol program and subject to testing according to federal regulations and Pierce Transit Policy. Must have the ability to operate all transit coaches and SHUTTLE vans.Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to perform the essential functions as described above including the ability to maneuver 300 pounds (passengers and wheelchair) over a 6" curb and up typical wheelchair ramps. The position involves physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force to move objects. •Note:
