General Description of Job:
The Shipping Department Supervisor is responsible for safety, quality and on-time production of products that meet our customers' requirements. This will be achieved by scheduling production, allocating resources, training and ensuring their employees are following Superior Steel Fabrication policies and procedures.
Typical Schedule:
7:30am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, with overtime as company need arises.
Essential Job Tasks:
  • Material / time management for entire department, ensuring maximum functionality of all machines; achieving productivity goals by ensuring operators are well prepared for each shift with materials to complete work orders. Ensuring additional work materials are prepared as needed.
  • Develop department leads and employees with regards to problem solving skills, department expectations, and adhering to MieTrak requirements
  • Utilize Shipping Department Dashboard for analytical and action needs of the department
  • Direct scheduling of all steps of department jobs ensuring compliance with all deadlines
  • Efficient management of time and scheduling for entire department; continuous daily production and on-time shift starts
  • Comprehensive scheduling of projects to ensure maximum output throughout shift including lunches and breaks when applicable
  • Ensure next shift is set up for shift opening (prepping materials or jobs for quick start up)
  • Track run vs expected hours by department/employee
  • Drive Department to meet 80% packaging time vs worked hours (logged hours vs payroll hours)
  • Interdepartmental collaboration with engineering and all other departments for continuous quality improvement; ensuring all steps of workflow are completed correctly. Initiate change orders for parts to minimize waste and ECR completion
  • Conduct and maintain accurate inventory counts on all parts and supplies within Department
  • Manage and complete all internal and external paperwork accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in a prudent, efficient and timely fashion as they arise
  • Meet and communicate effectively with engineers, expeditors, managers, office staff and employees
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility regarding supplies, preventive maintenance and labor allocations
  • Operational supervision of all employees when in the department
  • Evaluate and maintain exceptional quality standards
  • Provide quality control through part inspection of all parts manufactured within the department for quality and efficiency
  • Ability to identify and determine scope of concern systematically prevent the recurrence of production interference
  • Actively participate in recruitment and workforce management
Other Job Tasks:
  • Support all requirements of the Safety Committee and First Responders, preferably being a member of both groups
  • Organize and lead meetings with company personnel on a variety of topics
  • Meet all company requirements relating to the use of the time clock
  • Timely monitoring of employee hours
  • Utilize Maintenance Software to ensure all required maintenance is scheduled and completed within department guidelines and needs
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings
  • Adequately train personnel, both new and experienced, and monitor personnel skill level within the department
  • Conduct and/or assist with performance evaluations for department employees
  • Provide guidance to all personnel within the department
  • Conduct orientation of new employees
  • Abide by and enforce Employee Handbook including regular attendance and working cooperatively

Education, License, and Certification Requirements:
  • High school education, or higher, is preferred
  • Forklift certification required
  • Must meet all ISO required training as appropriate
  • CA/PR Inspection Stamp certification Amount of Supervision Required to

Environmental Factors and Working Conditions:
  • Work atmosphere is mostly indoors and can be noisy and dusty
  • Outside weather conditions affect shop temperature
  • Shop is partially heated in winter
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR DEMANDS
Standing (% of time, type of surface, activity): 50% on concrete shop floor supervising/working. Sitting (% of time, type of surface, activity): 20% in a chair doing paperwork/computer. Walking (% of time, type of surface, distance): 30% on concrete shop floor frequently across the shop. How often can worker change position? Frequently Carrying (weight, type of object, distance, frequency): Up to 50 lbs. fabricated metal parts, pallets and tooling 50-100ft frequently, occasionally across the shop. Lifting (weight, type of object, frequency): Up to 50 lbs. fabricated metal parts, pallets and tooling frequently. Pushing/Pulling (weight, type of object, frequency): Up to 50 lbs. sliding material or pushing and pulling wheeled tables loaded with 500lbs of parts frequently. Bending (frequency from waist, knees): Frequently from waist and knees. Reaching/Grasping (work being done, distance, frequency): Reaching often for a variety of tasks. Repetitive Motion (work being done, body parts used, frequency): Most repetitive motion is in the form of walking/writing/and using a computer. Some production work is necessary and consists of utilizing hands, arms and feet continuously. Twisting (work being done, body parts used, how far, frequency): Often from waist. Climbing (surface, height, slope, number of steps, frequency): Occasionally climb shop ladder or stairs to second level.
Employee Sign-off Form Shipping Department Supervisor Training:
○ Employees will be trained in specific areas of the Management System requirements that pertain to their job activities. ○ Other required training may be "on-the-job", achieved through meetings, classroom sessions and/or external courses/seminars. ○ Employees are expected to know and understand how their job activities affect quality - If in doubt ask. Quality Policy Deliver Parts with no Defects, On Time, Every Time.
