General Labor Job Description This role supports the Environmental team by helping ensure the facility, grounds, and on-site operations remain clean, well-maintained, and compliant with environmental regulations. You will perform a variety of general labor tasks in both indoor production areas and an outdoor scrap metal yard, contributing to safe, efficient, and orderly daily operations. Responsibilities Support the Environmental team by maintaining a clean and orderly facility, grounds, and work areas in line with environmental standards. Perform daily cleaning and sweeping of production areas, walkways, and outdoor yard spaces. Move materials and scrap metal safely within the facility and yard using appropriate tools and methods. Eliminate debris and waste from work areas, ensuring proper disposal and maintaining clear pathways. Carry out general facility upkeep, including basic maintenance and housekeeping tasks as assigned. Work in the scrap metal yard to support production activities, including handling and staging materials. Assist with picking, loading, and unloading shipments to support ongoing operations. Perform general cleaning and maintenance in and around equipment and workstations. Dispose of trash and debris by sweeping, shoveling, and transporting waste to designated areas. Use pressure washers to clean equipment and maintain a safe, debris-free environment. Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment at all times. Respond to additional tasks and directions from supervisors and team leads as operational needs arise. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience working in an outdoor environment such as construction, landscaping, or similar outdoor labor roles. Hands-on general labor experience, including physical tasks such as lifting, moving, and cleaning materials. Experience performing cleaning and janitorial duties in industrial, construction, or outdoor settings. Ability to work safely around heavy machinery, moving parts, and in dusty conditions. Ability to communicate effectively in English to follow instructions and safety guidelines. Willingness and physical ability to perform repetitive tasks such as sweeping, shoveling, and pressure washing for extended periods. Reliability and openness to work overtime, including some Saturdays as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in general construction, landscaping, or similar outdoor trades. Experience in janitorial or industrial cleaning environments. Bilingual Spanish and English communication skills. Comfort working in both indoor production areas and large outdoor yards. The organization promotes from within, providing a clear path for motivated employees to move into lead or shift leadership roles over time. You work in a stable environment with steady hours, where your contributions to safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency are recognized and appreciated. Work Environment The role is based at a steel, metal, and auto recycling facility that has operated for more than a century. The site includes an indoor production area and a large outdoor yard with heavy machinery, moving parts, loud noise levels, and dusty conditions. You will primarily work in the Joint Products department, which is located under a structure and offers partial coverage while still being closely connected to yard operations. The current shift runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with Saturday overtime as needed, typically about two Saturdays per month, so you must be open to working additional hours. The dress code requires steel-toe shoes, long pants, and a plain t-shirt or sweater, with a safety vest worn as the outer layer; the vest is provided on site.
