Job Description

This dual-role position combines commercial driving responsibilities with hands-on production work in our millworks facility. The CDL Driver/Millworks Laborer is responsible for the safe transport of finished hardwood products and raw materials to customers and suppliers, as well as supporting daily millworks production operations. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety — time behind the wheel and time on the shop floor — and takes pride in both quality craftsmanship and dependable delivery. Driving Responsibilities (~30%) Operate Class A or B commercial vehicles to deliver finished millwork products to customers and job sites throughout the region. Pick up raw materials, lumber, and supplies from suppliers as scheduled. Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections per DOT regulations; document and report any defects. Maintain accurate driver logs (electronic or paper) in compliance with FMCSA Hours of Service rules. Load and unload deliveries safely, using forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks as needed. Secure loads properly to prevent shifting, damage, or loss in transit. Communicate delivery status and any delays to the Operations Manager and customers in a timely manner. Maintain a clean, organized vehicle; coordinate scheduled maintenance with management. Represent Root River Hardwoods professionally at all customer and supplier locations. Comply with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations at all times. Millworks Production Responsibilities (~70%) Operate millwork machinery according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Set up, adjust, and maintain machines to meet production and quality standards. Schedule and coordinate blade/tool changes, cleaning, and equipment teardown. Dislodge and clear jammed wood, panels, or other materials from machinery. Communicate with material handlers and production leads regarding workflow and material needs. Accurately track and record production data and outputs. Ensure products meet customer specifications; communicate specifications to team members. Use calipers and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and quality. Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and production documentation. Identify production line issues, non-conforming products, and implement corrective actions. Lead or support Lean Manufacturing and 5S initiatives. Promote teamwork, safety, and a positive work environment. Qualifications Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) — no DUIs, reckless driving, or major violations within the past 5 years. Must meet DOT physical requirements and pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen. Minimum 1-2 years of commercial driving experience preferred. Experience operating millwork or industrial woodworking machinery is a strong plus. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and production documentation. Proficiency with precision measuring tools (calipers, tape measures, etc.). Forklift certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and stand, bend, and walk for extended periods on the shop floor. Excellent communication skills and a team-first attitude.
