Job Description

Heavy Industrial Material Handler NW Portland Day Shift $23.50/hr. Job Description The Material Handler sorts and organizes metal materials for processing and recycling while working in both warehouse and outdoor yard areas. This is a highly physical position that involves regularly lifting metal parts up to 50 pounds, unloading and loading trucks, and moving materials safely and efficiently throughout the facility. Approximately half of the work takes place indoors and half outdoors in a heavy industrial environment. Responsibilities Sort and organize various metals for processing and recycling according to established procedures. Handle materials safely and efficiently, including lifting, carrying, and moving metal parts between designated areas. Unload incoming trucks and load outgoing trucks with metal materials and related products. Work both inside the warehouse and outside in the yard, adapting to changing tasks and priorities. Use proper lifting techniques and follow all safety guidelines while regularly lifting up to 50 pounds. Maintain a clean and organized work area in both indoor and outdoor spaces. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toed boots, and ear plugs. Follow all safety rules and procedures in a heavy industrial environment with active machinery and equipment. Collaborate with team members and communicate clearly to ensure efficient material flow and safe operations. Support general labor tasks as needed in a production, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, or industrial setting. Essential Skills Experience working in manufacturing, warehousing, or an industrial environment. Comfort working in a heavy industrial setting with noise, dirt, and active machinery. Ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds throughout the shift. Willingness to work approximately 50% of the time outdoors and 50% indoors. Ability to wear and consistently use all required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toed boots, and ear plugs. Reliability and readiness to perform physically demanding general labor tasks. Basic familiarity with production, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, or materials handling work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in general labor within production, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, or industrial environments. Comfort working in varying weather conditions outdoors (rain gear provided when needed). Ability to follow safety procedures and adapt to a loud, fast-paced environment. Strong work ethic and willingness to learn recycling and metal processing operations. Team-oriented mindset with clear communication skills. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role operates on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The work takes place in a heavy industrial scrap metal yard that is on the dirtier side of work environments and can be loud in many areas due to heavy equipment and machinery running. Approximately half of the work is performed indoors in a warehouse setting and half outdoors in the yard, with exposure to the elements; rain gear is provided when needed. The environment requires strict adherence to safety practices and the consistent use of personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, and ear plugs. The facility reflects an industrial atmosphere but is part of a long-standing, family-owned business that places a strong emphasis on employee well-being and safety. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.50 - $23.50/hr.
