Job Description
Are you a strategic leader ready to manage the complete lifecycle of solid waste operations? The Borough is seeking an experienced Director of Solid Waste to oversee the planning, budgeting, administration, and environmental compliance of all solid waste programs, ensuring effective and environmentally sound waste management for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Executive Management:
Direct the operations, budgeting, planning, and development of all solid waste programs (landfills, transfer facilities, recycling, and hazardous waste).Compliance & Safety:
Ensure full adherence to local, state, and federal solid waste regulations, including permits, safety, and environmental monitoring.Project & Contract Oversight:
Prepare, administer, and manage complex construction, operations, and professional service contracts and bid documents.Public & Inter-Agency Liaison:
Serve as the Borough's representative in public meetings, work closely with external entities, and coordinate extensively with other Borough departments.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in business management, civil engineering, environmental science or related field and two years of equivalent hands-on experience in solid waste management, business, management, civil engineering, environmental science, or related operations; or Six years of equivalent hands-on experience in solid waste management, business, management, civil engineering, environmental science, or related operations. Have strong leadership and management experience, demonstrated by supervising teams, overseeing budgets, and making strategic operational decisions. Must have experience guiding complex projects, fostering collaboration, and building positive relationships with staff, stakeholders, and the public. Must have knowledge of landfill and transfer facility operations, as well as federal, state, and local regulations related to waste disposal. Must be proficient with computer applications. Must have a valid, unrestricted Alaska driver's license.
