Sacramento County, Department of Waste Management and Recycling is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student assistant to support the Planning and External Relations Division and the Special Waste Collection Division. This position provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the public sector assisting with regulatory compliance, data management, developing environmental programs, and conducting community outreach to our internal and external customers. The office is located in 10863 Gold Center Dr, Rancho Cordova, CA 95760. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Majors/Fields of Study Public Administration, Government, Public Policy and Administration, Urban Land Development, Natural Resources, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Communications, or a closely related field. Work Schedule Work schedule is flexible to accommodate the student's class schedule. Student assistants generally work 10 - 24 hours per week (7AM-5PM) during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. The schedule may include some weekends for outreach events. Work locations include both office and field/facility work. Student assistants will work in-person at the office or a county facility, unless certain circumstances require otherwise. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per week (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $17.50 to 23.50 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Strong written and verbal communication skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general computer applications. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. CA Driver's License required. Able to work well with others in a group environment or on their own. Must be comfortable talking and interacting with customers, businesses and/or staff. Preferred Qualifications Interest in environmental policy, waste management, or public service is ideal. Experience working in an office environment and/or customer service is a plus. Duties and Responsibilities The student will provide support to the Programs and External Relations Division, working with the Waste Management Program Senior Associate in the following areas: Areas of focus are as follows: Recycling; Recycling education; California policies related to recycling (i.e. Solid Waste Management (Assembly Bill 939); Mandatory Commercial Recycling (Assembly Bill 341); Mandatory Organics Recycling (Assembly Bill 1826); Recycling Infrastructures (Assembly Bill 827); Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (Senate Bill 1383); Hazardous Waste Collection/Diversion. Assist with performing inspections in compliance with various state regulations. May involve recording and tracking data. Develop public outreach materials. Assist with community events and workshops for the public (occasional nights or weekends). Research and report on various solid waste and recycling topics. Record, analyze, and track data using County tracking software and excel. Actively participate in meetings involving members of the solid waste industry and management staff. Assist in the school education and infrastructure programs within the unincorporated area of Sacramento County. Assist with development and implementation of new programs. Provide customer service support at various division locations. Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; ability to lift at least 20lbs; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in both an office and field environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
