Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Occasional weekends and non-standard hours, based on business need. - The entry pay for this position is $19.94-24.02 per hour, based on qualifications. - The primary responsibility of this role is operating a towed vacuum truck to collect and dispose of leaves and grass. Additional duties and requirements as described below.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator II performs skilled operational work involving the operation of medium to heavy equipment for the construction, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, streets, rights-of-way, drainage systems, and public facilities. This position performs work in accordance with established procedures, safety standards, and City policies. The Equipment Operator II may assist with training less experienced staff and provides operational support across multiple Public Works functions as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance, instruction, or training to Equipment Operator I employees or temporary staff as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs daily inspections of equipment and vehicles, including checking fluid levels, belts, batteries, tires, and safety components. Cleans, fuels, and performs routine maintenance on equipment, tools, and shop areas. Identifies and reports mechanical issues, unsafe conditions, or equipment malfunctions to a supervisor. Performs manual labor including lifting, digging, moving materials, and assisting with construction or maintenance tasks. Follows all City safety rules, policies, and procedures and wears required personal protective equipment (PPE). Assists with traffic control and work-zone safety as required. Reads and interprets work orders, operator manuals, and basic construction or maintenance plans. Provides operational support to other Public Works divisions or City departments as assigned. Landscape:
Focuses primarily on the beautification, upkeep, and maintenance of City-owned property and facilities. Operates specialized mowing, landscaping, and other equipment to maintain turf, clear overgrown vegetation, and enhance city aesthetics. Assists with planting, pruning, and debris removal on public grounds. Performs chemical applications, including spraying and maintaining City properties with herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers in accordance with safety regulations. If Assigned to
Street:
Focuses primarily on the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of city streets, public rights-of-way, and drainage systems. Operates medium to heavy equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, trenchers, tractors, and related attachments to perform infrastructure work. Drives and operates City vehicles including dump trucks, flatbed trucks, pickup trucks, and bucket trucks. Performs excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material movement for utility, roadway, and drainage projects. Assists with pipe installation, repair, and maintenance of stormwater, drainage, or related infrastructure systems. If Assigned to
Refuse:
Focuses primarily on the collection and disposal of residential yard waste and bulk household items. Operates a towed vacuum machine and knuckle boom truck to efficiently collect yard trash (e.g., leaves, pine straw) and bulk items (e.g., appliances, furniture). Ensures safe loading, securing, and transport of collected materials to designated disposal sites. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of traffic regulations, work-zone safety practices, and accident prevention procedures. Strong mechanical aptitude for routine equipment inspections and servicing. Basic math and record-keeping skills. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public. Ability to read and understand operator manuals, work orders, and basic technical instructions. Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to safely operate, maintain, and troubleshoot assigned equipment and vehicles. If assigned to

Knowledge of commercial landscaping practices, turf management, and the safe operation of specialized mowing and groundskeeping equipment; Knowledge of the safe handling, mixing, application, and disposal of landscape chemicals and spray equipment. If assigned to

Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair practices for streets, drainage systems, and municipal infrastructure Proficiency in operating heavy earth-moving machinery. If assigned to
Refuse:
Knowledge of safe bulk-loading techniques and routes Proficiency in operating specialized collection equipment, specifically towed vacuums and knuckle boom trucks.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, or related work experience. One year of related experience. Current and valid Driver's License. If assigned to Street, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of hire. If assigned to Refuse, valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of hire. If assigned to Landscape, current Alabama Spray Technician License at time of hire. Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and non-standard hours as needed. Ability to perform related duties as required. Preferred Qualifications Three years of relevant experience. Experience in municipal or public works operations. If assigned to Landscape, possession of a valid CDL or ability to obtain within an established timeframe.

The work requires agility, strength, and endurance. The work involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, moving machinery, traffic, noise, and chemicals. Employees must wear appropriate PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, safety shoes, and other protective gear as required. Uniforms may be provided for certain operations. Employees will be required to work outside in extreme conditions, including loud noises, foul odors, intense sunlight, high heat indices, high winds, high humidity, and/or heavy rainfall events.
