WORK OBJECTIVE

Under the supervision of a departmental supervisor, the incumbent performs unskilled manual labor. General duties would consist of the collection and disposal of household refuse. Incumbents will perform work in all environmental conditions, some of which may be adverse. May also work in all areas of Public Works Department as workload demands.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of six (6) months work experience that provides knowledge of various types of manual labor. Must display physical fitness and dexterity to perform job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. Collects debris and refuse and solid waste by manually collecting along designated routes throughout the City on a regular schedule and in response to emergency clean up orders. Transporting and disposing of garbage in a safe, effective, and environmentally friendly manner at dump site. Maintains solid waste vehicle daily by cleaning.

Knowledge of potential hazards of the materials collected. Has considerable knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices. Ability to endure tough working conditions. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks. Knowledge of proper lifting techniques when handling heavy objects. Ability to follow oral and simple written directions in the English language. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Team player. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions. Is skilled in the use of tools and maintenance equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in a variety of conditions and required frequent exposure to adverse/disagreeable environmental conditions. Person(s) in this position will be exposed to moderate noise levels, dust, and inclement weather conditions, including but not limited to, high heat levels, cold, and wet weather, and potentially adverse environments.
