Job Description

Performs difficult skilled work on a variety of construction, maintenance and repair projects. Operates specialized equipment in connection with task. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
  • Performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, water distribution, sewer lines, and stormwater systems.
  • Repairs, changes, and installs new water meters and maintains related records.
  • Repairs and test backflow prevention devices. Replaces devices as needed. Prepares necessary work orders and record keeping logs on backflow devices as needed.
  • Operates track hoe, backhoe, dozer, forklift, tractors, wheel loader, grader, street sweeper, VAC truck, and other heavy equipment in the installation, maintenance, and repair on projects on streets, water lines, sewer lines, parks, driveways, and related facilities.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on fire hydrants and valves.
  • Assist with the setting up and breaking down for special events.
  • Performs utility locates as needed.
  • Performs all tasks and duties of Maintenance Specialist I and II when required.
  • Supervises crews as assigned.
  • Keeps assigned crew truck clean and stocked as directed by division supervision.
  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Ensure safety protocols and procedures are being followed
  • Comprehensive skills and knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventative maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift heavy articles
  • Ability to read and write
  • Ability to use work order software
  • Good physical condition
  • Ability to wear proper PPE for given conditions.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual activity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The ability to smell is required to sense hazardous gases in the air.
Education and Experience:
Highschool diploma or equivalent; 2-4 years of experience in the performance of heavy manual work including extensive experience in the operation of heavy equipment and motorized vehicles; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities and other competencies necessary for the position.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Valid Florida Driver's License required
  • Requires the possession of a class B CDL license valid in the State of Florida.
  • Possession of a water distribution license
  • Possession of a backflow testing and inspector certificate
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Possess an aptitude and willingness to learn
  • On-the-job training is offered
