Job Description

Additional $2.00/hr for CDL certification is available. Job Summary This is skilled work in the operation of recycling equipment including box truck, balers, glass crushers, conveyors, elevators, a forklift, and other related recycling equipment. This work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of all of the above listed equipment and the daily maintenance of the equipment and of the recycling building. This work is done under the supervision of the Solid Waste Director, but the employee works independently the majority of the time. Essential Functions Operates and maintains of all recycling equipment; Moves recyclables to pre processing areas, processes the materials, and moves the processed materials to pre-shipment areas; loads materials on trucks; Checks all equipment and the building on a daily basis for possible problems in housekeeping and maintenance; Assists the public in sorting materials, and in some cases, by picking up recyclable materials from the public; Operates truck for pickup of recyclable items from businesses in town and out in the county. This position does not require a CDL; Inspects collection barrels, carts, dumpsters, and other department equipment to ensure proper functioning and notifies management of any deficiencies; Sweeps floors and picks up items off of floor and outside of the building; Operates fork lift, bailers, conveyors, paper shredders, scales and glass crushers on daily basis; Manages community services people that come in to work; Keeps recycle check book up to date and records bale tickets; Responds to citizen requests for information; Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment as required by regulations; Complete training requirements as deemed necessary; Perform under limited supervision and work overtime based on the needs of the facility; Cleans facilities on assigned days; Works Saturday morning rotation. Secondary Functions Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge Of Modern office practices and procedures; Knowledge of principles and practices of recycling; State, Federal and local laws and regulations related to recycling functions. Skill In The operation of recycling equipment including box trucks, balers, glass crushers, conveyors, elevators, a forklift, and other related recycling equipment; Communicating a positive attitude, empathy, energy and helpfulness to customers or co-workers and to provide the assistance customers or co-workers need; Following oral and written instructions. Ability To Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and to service and clean equipment on a regular basis; Understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain accurate records; Speak, read and write English proficiently; See and hear clearly; Read and understand equipment operations manuals; Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient working relationships with other employees, officials and the public. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License. Required Education and/or Experience High school diploma or G.E.D.; six months to twelve months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education and/or Experience Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one year to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
