Job Description

The Southern Region Parks Division (SRPD) of the Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking Seasonal Waste Management Maintenance Workers to support park sanitation, trash and recycling operations, and overall site cleanliness throughout Southern Prince George's County. Seasonal Waste Management Workers perform routine waste collection, litter removal, and related maintenance tasks to ensure parks, facilities, and public spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for visitors. This position supports daily park operations by assisting with trash removal routes, recycling collection, equipment operation, and response to weather-related and special event needs. Regularly remove litter, debris, and ground trash from park sites and facilities Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout assigned park locations Transport collected waste and recyclable materials to designated disposal or transfer locations Assist with operating trash packers, dump trucks, and other light to medium equipment under supervision Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment using proper safety procedures Utilize hand tools and equipment related to waste management and grounds maintenance Assist with special event waste support, including setup, monitoring, and post-event cleanup Respond to weather-related emergencies such as snow removal and storm cleanup Perform minor repairs to site amenities and assist with preventive maintenance tasks Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or damaged equipment to supervisors Interact courteously and professionally with park visitors and staff Follow all safety procedures, departmental policies, and operational guidelines Work as part of a team and assist with other park maintenance duties as assigned Required Must be at least 18 years of age Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Ability to work independently and as part of a team Availability to work assigned schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed Preferred Previous experience in waste management, groundskeeping, or general maintenance Familiarity with hand tools and light equipment Experience working in parks, public works, or outdoor environments Interest in parks, recreation, or facilities maintenance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of basic waste collection and sanitation practices Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and vehicles as assigned Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to cleanliness and safety Effective communication and customer service skills May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing. Work Hours Work schedules vary by assignment and operational needs. Seasonal hours are not guaranteed and may fluctuate based on program demands. Typical work hours are 6:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. , but schedules may vary to support operational needs. Working Conditions / Environment Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to weather conditions, noise, dirt, odors, and physical activity, including lifting, bending, standing, walking, and operating equipment for extended periods.
