Position Summary The Mechanic's Assistant supports maintenance staff and is trained to perform the maintenance and renewal of wastewater facilities and associated systems including, but not limited to, liquids treatment, solids handling, chemical systems, odor control, and lift stations. This position performs a variety of work assignments to ensure acceptable asset condition, wastewater quality and health and safety standards are met or exceeded. Performs related work as required to ensure efficient and effective facility maintenance. J Job Responsibilities Works collaboratively with Mechanics and Plant Operators to conduct treatment maintenance and renewal; assuring optimal asset efficiency and regulatory compliance. Assists in the evaluation of equipment performance by observation and utilizing instrumentation to ensure compliant and efficient operations to facility assets. Assists in the routine maintenance and repair to existing machinery and equipment. Work may be performed on such process equipment as pumps, blowers and valves. Performs emergency repairs outside routine working schedule as needed. Performs rough carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding and additional mechanical duties as required. Notifies appropriate personnel of needed repairs and renewal. Assists Mechanic in planning, performing, and implementing maintenance procedures for treatment assets, including assisting with inventory control and management. Follows job plans to ensure safe and consistent work practices. Vigilantly monitors the facility for any breaches of security and alerts appropriate agencies and/or supervisors, as appropriate for the situation. Assists with maintenance of facility grounds and general housekeeping, as well as the appearance of the facility. Participates in an environment of Integrity, Trust, Respect, Unity, Safety, and Teamwork. Observes safety guidelines as required by State statutes and as prescribed by the NTMWD. This includes identifying and mitigating safety hazards. Transports equipment and receives equipment and standard shipments. Learns and complies with applicable NTMWD policies and procedures. Maintains thorough logs and records in both written and electronic form as required. Creates and resolves service requests related to plant operations and maintenance activities utilizing the CMMS (Maximo) to coordinate with personnel and support personnel. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED. An associate degree or trade certification is preferred. Must possess basic mechanical, electrical, technology, and operations aptitude. Experience in wastewater operations or maintenance is strongly preferred. Ability to comprehend and carryout out written and oral instruction. Preference is to obtain a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Wastewater or Water Treatment or Collection or Distribution System Operator's License. Requires a valid Texas Driver's License. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Develop and maintain knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including the ability to troubleshoot wastewater treatment equipment and processes. Must obtain knowledge in wastewater treatment chemical safety and response procedures, including a certificate in hazardous materials for chemical safety procedures. Must communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with supervisors, peers, to convey information. Maintain basic computer skills, and electrical and mechanical knowledge. Ability to comprehend and carryout out written and oral instruction. Environmental and Physical Working Conditions Environmental and Physical Working Conditions Driving a District vehicle for business will be required. Employees required to drive as part of their job duties are responsible for maintaining a current, valid, and vehicle - appropriate driver' s license of their resident state. The duties and responsibilities are generally performed in a wastewater treatment environment. The position involves sitting (up to 6 hours per day), frequent standing, frequent walking, light to heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.), light carrying, frequent bending and reaching, keyboarding, and telephone operation. It may require an irregular work schedule and overtime hours. Specific physical conditions require frequent work with chemicals, tools, machinery, moving mechanical parts, etc. The duties and responsibilities are performed both indoors and outdoors. Moderate to heavy exposure to sun, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, biological hazards, rain, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials and chemicals, machinery, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and water hazards are common. Performs and reviews work at locations that involve hazardous environments requiring the physical ability to wear and work using personal protective equipment (PPE) that meet or exceed guidelines such as established by OSHA which may result in physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, odors, chemicals and noise. The position may require work in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions with appropriate training. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Perform functions requiring manual dexterity and precision movements, continuous or repetitive arm and hand movements, grasping movements, and occasional forceful exertion. Perceive/discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth and visual cues or signals.
