JOB SUMMARY:
This is a skilled position with the City's Distribution Services Department. This position is primarily responsible for the installation and maintenance of water sewer systems and related components such as, but not limited to water meters, meter vaults and boxes, manholes, valves, fire hydrants, pumps and lift stations. Work will include new construction, repair and maintenance of complete systems. Individual will be required to operator necessary equipment and machinery necessary for completion of task. This machinery includes backhoe, valve truck, front-end loader, trencher, sewer jet truck, dump truck, haul truck and trailer, and other smaller machines, tools and less complex types of power equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Excavate for water main repair or new construction when needed. Excavate for fire hydrants and valves to be repaired or replaced when needed. Backfill, cleanup and restore area where work was performed. Excavate for repair of service lines and push-holes for push machine to facilitate pushing of new line when needed. Haul backhoe, trencher, loader and other equipment to and from job site with haul truck. Haul pipe, dirt, rock and spoil to and from job site. Clean choked sewer with jet truck. Excavate for repair or construction of sewer lines. Other duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Water and wastewater systems and components
Practices and methods of construction of these systems. Plumbing practice or pipefitting.
Ability to:
Operate light equipment such as box blade, skid steer, loader, trencher, jet truck, valve truck, dump truck and other equipment. Perform manual labor in extremes of hot and cold weather. Physically able to grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy (75lbs or more) objects repeatedly, on a daily basis. Understand and carry out both written and verbal work instructions under direct supervision of a supervisor and/or crew leader. Maintain safe, effective working relationship with others. Must be available to work various shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays and on-call as required.
Experience and Education:
Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
One year of Equipment Operator on water distribution and wastewater collection system construction preferred. One year performing as Utilities Laborer preferred.
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent as certified by proper authority.
Licenses:
Must possess a valid Class "C" or greater Driver's License.
Must be able to obtain a Class "A" or greater Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment as a condition of continued employment.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Incumbents assigned to this position may be required to work varying shifts including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call as assigned. Incumbents assigned to this position can reasonably expect to be exposed to all weather conditions and various hazardous substances such as biological and chemical agents on a routine basis. Additionally, incumbents assigned to this position can expect to be exposed to various hazardous work environments and must be physically capable of utilizing required PPE, including special fitted full face respirator. Observation of pump and motor operation and other routine monitoring of equipment and processes require the incumbent to be physically able to climb steps, stairs and ladders and bend and stoop frequently on a daily basis. Personal safety and chemical spill response procedures require that incumbents assigned to this position be physically capable of hearing audible alarms and sirens. This position has been classified as a "safety-sensitive" position. All incumbents assigned to a "safety-sensitive" position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
