Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Superintendent, an employee filling this position must possess working knowledge and methods of the materials, tools, and equipment used in the general maintenance of city property, utilities and facilities to complete assignments safely and efficiently. Individuals must be able to perform heavy manual labor and be able to operate all equipment/vehicles as required by the Department. The employee must be able to work safely, respond to after-hours emergencies, and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to public utilities including certifications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate all units of equipment/tools safely and efficiently. Repair and maintain public/private properties Respond to emergency calls outside regular working hours. Repair minor building repairs. Transport, assemble, maintain and disassemble voting machines. Assist in the plowing and removal of snow, as well as salting and brining streets on occasion. Assist in the collection of brush, leaves, and other special pick-ups. Install and remove traffic signs. Deliver and pick-up items, goods, equipment, and information to assigned areas. Exercise judgment for safe working practices and follow established safety rules. Be available for on-call assignments for water, sewer, snow plowing/shoveling and emergency operations. Assist in mowing grass, removing weeds and general landscaping on city properties. Assist in pruning/removing trees and brush. Change tires, oil, air filters, and snow plow blades on equipment. Answer telephone calls. Perform routine maintenance on equipment/tools as needed. Notify employees of emergency situations requiring immediate attention. Perform year-end inventory on related equipment, tools and files. Dispense fuel into vehicles, tools and equipment. Be able to assist in the management of the City's water and sewer system with general autonomy such as hydrant flushing, water sampling, valve extraction. Research and prepare reports, special projects, and suggested operating guidelines. Investigate and implement methods for making the utility operations more efficient. Perform/monitor annual inventory on related equipment, tools, and files. Other duties that may be assigned from time to time, including assisting other Departmental staff when necessary. Regular full-time attendance at this position is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's license class A & B and tanker endorsement. Four or more years' experience in public works, construction management or water and wastewater systems, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the minimum knowledge, skills and abilities. Certification as an Basic licensed Wastewater Operator by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and D-T Water System Operator Certification or ISA Certified Arborist. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of the principles and practices of public works. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of work. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Verbally respond to inquiries made by citizens, employees, and officials. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Equipment Used Commercial vehicles Trucks/automobiles with either automatic/manual transmissions Aerial bucket Log loader/Knuckleboom Brush chipper Patrol truck with wing and front plow Lawn mowers Chain saws Leaf vacuum VAC truck Front end loader Mechanical equipment-tools, lifts, jacks, etc. All other equipment essential to the departmental operations
