Additional Compensation:
$25•$30/hour for approximately 40 hours of pre-camp work, free room & board provided if staying on-site, and professional liability insurance reimbursed About Camp Opportunity Camp Opportunity provides a traditional overnight summer camp experience for children ages 8-11 in Maryland who have experienced abuse and neglect. Our program focuses on building self-worth, resilience, and connection in a safe, supportive community. Position Overview The Head Camp Nurse (RN) oversees all health and medical services for Camp Opportunity in accordance with Maryland Department of Health (COMAR) Youth Camp Regulations. This role includes both pre-camp planning responsibilities and medical oversight during three residential camp sessions. The Head Camp Nurse serves as the lead medical professional and supervises on-site medical staff, including an additional nurse and/or medication technician. While flexibility is offered regarding overnight stays, the Head Nurse must be available on-call 24/7 during camp sessions and maintain a consistent on-site presence to ensure proper supervision, support, and compliance. Key Responsibilities Clinical Oversight & Compliance Implement and oversee the Camp Health Program in compliance with Maryland Youth Camp (COMAR) regulations Ensure proper medication administration, storage, and documentation Maintain accurate, confidential health records for campers and staff using CampDoc Leadership & Supervision Supervise and support medical staff, including an on-site nurse and/or medication technician Provide guidance and oversight to ensure quality care and regulatory compliance Serve as the primary medical decision-maker during camp sessions Camper & Staff Care Assess and respond to illnesses, injuries, and medical needs Conduct health screenings at camper arrival and departure Communicate with parents/guardians regarding significant medical concerns Coordinate care with outside providers when necessary Operations & Preparedness Oversee setup and organization of the Health Suite Ensure all medical supplies and first aid kits are stocked and distributed Monitor sanitation and safety conditions across camp Complete incident reports and required documentation Collaboration & Communication Partner with camp leadership to maintain a safe and healthy environment Communicate effectively with staff, families, and medical partners Remain available by phone at all times during camp sessions when off-site Pre-Camp Responsibilities & Compensation The Head Camp Nurse will complete approximately 40 hours of pre-camp work to prepare for safe and compliant camp operations.
Responsibilities may include:
Reviewing camper health histories and medical forms in CampDoc Following up with families and healthcare providers for missing or incomplete information Coordinating with camp leadership on medical planning Reviewing and updating Health Care Plan and Standing Orders with the camp's physician Ordering and organizing medical supplies Preparing and supporting medical staff (nurse/med tech) Assisting with Health Lodge setup planning Qualifications Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland (required) Minimum 2 years of nursing experience (pediatric, school, community, or camp experience preferred) CPR/BLS certification (required) Experience supervising staff or leading a team preferred Strong organizational, communication, and clinical assessment skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment Commitment to working with children who have experienced trauma Additional Requirements Must obtain personal professional liability insurance (cost reimbursed by Camp Opportunity) Must pass a comprehensive background check Must be available for all three weeks of camp Must be available 24/7 on-call during camp sessions, with required on-site presence at key times Work Structure & Flexibility Flexible model: may reside on-site or commute If off-site, must be immediately available to support on-site medical staff On-site presence required during camper arrival/departure and as needed throughout camp Equal Opportunity Employer Camp Opportunity is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
