Job Description
This is an opportunity to work one-on-one to make a difference in a disabled person's life! Experience is required. Dependability, patience, good communication and open-mindedness are essential. This is a part-time job (4-12 hours per week) working with a client who is a high-functioning neurologically divergent 31-year old with mental health challenges, living independently as part of the Self-Direction Program of Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Selected applicants must complete an application process through Wildwood, including passing a N.Y.S. background check.
The client is 31 years old and prefers working with people who are older than her, who does not smoke, and is not allergic to cats. If selected, you will join a small skilled team, each of whom are scheduled for anywhere between one to three regular 4-hour shifts (9 AM-1 PM and 4 PM-8 PM, Monday-Sunday), with flexibility to accommodate your schedule. (At current time, we are especially looking for people with weekend availability, but encourage you to apply whatever your availability). We seek a candidate with experience working with people with complex developmental disabilities. Care-giving, mental health, special education, psychology, healing arts, arts and education, and similar backgrounds, are a plus. Awareness of how to de-escalate situations that arise and learn how to recognize behavioral situations that might be challenging are critical. The client loves to live independently, self-advocates well, and likes to be active and engaged in the community. The goal is to support their goal of living and caring for themselves on their own. Activities include supporting independent life skills in the home, calming activities, self-care including meals, and making sure the two cats and her home are cared for. In the community, activities include exploring social, educational and healthy opportunities around the region, and driving for errands, outings, and field trips. We are looking for someone who is a calm, kind and fun person, and who doesn't take things personally. We seek a balanced professional, who is creative and an independent thinker. Valuable skills include building positive communication and social interaction, anxiety reduction and psychology, health and nutrition, planning and cooking meals, arts and crafts, nature activities, wellness and safety, budgeting, homemaking and love of animals and nature.
