Job Description

Chief Operating Officer (COO) About the Role We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead overall company operations and drive the continued growth of a national Compliance and Leasing consulting business. This executive leadership role partners closely with the President to establish strategic direction, oversee operational and financial performance, and support long-term organizational growth. You will oversee all aspects of business operations, including client services, financial performance, business development, compliance, team leadership, and organizational strategy, while also serving as a public-facing representative of the company at conferences, industry events, and stakeholder engagements. This role requires an accomplished executive with deep experience in multifamily and/or affordable housing, strong financial and operational acumen, and a proven ability to lead high-performing teams in a growth-oriented environment. What You'll Do Design and lead the operating model: Within your first 180 days, implement a coherent operating model; establish governance, SOPs, decision rights, and escalation paths; stand up SLAs and dashboards for each core function. Co-create strategy with the
President:
Co-author a 3-year strategic plan; translate strategy into executive and functional OKRs; run a disciplined operating cadence with decision logs and on-time closure. Own service delivery and client outcomes: Oversee intake-to-delivery-to-billing-to-cash; improve on-time delivery, quality, and client retention; partner with Sales/Marketing for account growth and ABM initiatives. Drive P&L performance: Improve gross margin and cost-to-serve; increase forecast accuracy; manage working capital and cash conversion; ensure financial controls, policy adherence, and audit readiness.
Build high-performing teams:
Lead org design, workforce planning, and succession; develop leaders; foster engagement, inclusion, and a feedback culture; maintain low regrettable attrition. Scale growth in our specialized market: Shape GTM strategy for professional services; price and productize offerings; expand into new geographies/segments; accelerate strategic partner/channel activity.
Lead change and process improvement:
Deliver enterprise-wide change initiatives; apply Lean/Agile principles to reduce cycle time; maintain quality at scale with robust root cause and prevention practices.
Represent the brand externally:
Serve as a public-facing executive; speak at conferences and industry events; cultivate strategic partnerships; convert thought leadership into qualified pipeline.
Enable data and systems:
Integrate
PSA/CRM/ERP/BI
; ensure data integrity and governance; deploy driver-based analytics for decision making.
Strengthen compliance-by-design:
Embed regulatory, legal, and contracting rigor into operations; manage vendor performance and risk. What You Bring (Must-Haves) 10+ years of progressive operations leadership in professional services/consulting, including multi-state or national footprint. Deep domain expertise in multifamily and/or affordable housing compliance and leasing; familiarity with relevant regulations and audit cycles. Proven P&L ownership with measurable margin improvement, cost optimization, and cash conversion results. Track record designing and running operating models (governance, SOPs, SLAs, OKRs) and improving cross-functional throughput and quality. Executive presence and public speaking ability; success representing a brand with partners, clients, and at industry events.
Data-driven management:
forecasting, variance analysis, and driver-based decision models; ability to build KPI dashboards and an operating cadence. Systems fluency across PSA/CRM/ERP/BI and data governance fundamentals.
People leadership excellence:
org design, succession, coaching, and engagement with an inclusive approach. Ability to travel up to 25% to client sites and industry engagements. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience. Nice to Have MBA or advanced degree in business, finance, or related field. Experience productizing professional services, managed services, or subscription offerings. Lean Six Sigma, Agile, or change management certifications. Experience achieving 20% YoY growth in a specialized consulting segment. Background in financial controls, audit readiness, and "SOX-lite" rigor. Familiarity with regulators/programs relevant to affordable housing (e.g., HUD, LIHTC) and leasing compliance.
