Church Music Director

Position Summary:

Zion Lutheran Church in Long Valley, NJ, a caring and growing congregation founded more than 260 years ago, is seeking a part-time Music Director who will lead the choir and accompany our 9:30AM Sunday worship and other special services (e.g., Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Ash Wednesday). We are looking for someone who can creatively contribute to a lively worship environment. Candidates should have proficiency in playing the organ and piano and directing the choir. Experience with liturgical music is preferred, as is skill with contemporary hymnody. Instruments include a 2-manual Allen Organ, Roland Digital Piano, and an upright piano. The Music Director is responsible to: Plan and lead music for Sunday worship including a weekly choir anthem, and additional seasonal services, Plan and lead weekly choir rehearsals and direct the choir in worship. Work collaboratively with the pastor, parish secretary and bell choir director Provide music for weddings and funerals as available (separate stipend is provided by those involved). Recruit choir members, contemporary singers, and other musicians to share talents. Purchase new music as needed within with the worship and music budget, and become familiar with Zion's catalog of music. Oversee the maintenance of the church's pianos and organ. Schedule and Compensation The position is part-time, and the hours may vary with the church season (e.g., Holy Week) and the four seasons (e.g., summer during which the choir does not meet).
