Job Description

Overview Join our vibrant faith community as a Church Sexton (Facilities), where you will play a vital role in maintaining a welcoming, safe, and spiritually nurturing environment. The Sexton is responsible for the overall care and maintenance of the church building, grounds, and facilities to ensure that they are safe, clean, and welcoming for worship services, church events, and community activities. This individual plays a key role in creating a hospitable and sacred environment where worship and ministry can thrive. Key Responsibilities 1.
Building and Grounds Maintenance:
o Clean and maintain the interior of the church building, including restrooms, sanctuary, fellowship hall, offices, and classrooms. o Ensure the exterior of the building and surrounding grounds are well-kept, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, shoveling snow, and collecting/removing trash. o Perform routine maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. o Check and maintain lighting, electrical systems, plumbing, and other essential utilities. 2. Set-Up and Preparation for
Services and Events:
o Set up and prepare the sanctuary and other spaces for worship services and meetings, including arranging furniture, adjusting lighting, and ensuring sound/AV equipment is functioning. o Assist with the preparation and clean-up for church events, meetings, weddings, funerals, and other special services. o Coordinate with ministry leaders and event organizers to ensure specific needs are met for events. 3.
Security and Safety:
o Ensure the church building and zones are secured and that the building is locked and monitored when not in use. o Perform safety inspections, including ensuring exit doors and fire extinguishers are in place and functioning. o Report any hazards or maintenance needs to the Church Council or Pastor immediately. 4.
Inventory and Supplies:
o Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, tools, and other necessary materials. o Order or purchase supplies as needed for church maintenance and cleaning. o Ensure that all supplies, equipment, accessories and sacramental items are available for services. 5.
Collaboration and Communication:
o Work closely with the pastor, church staff, and volunteer teams to ensure that the church's physical environment aligns with worship needs. o Serve as a point of contact for any maintenance issues or facility-related inquiries. o Provide regular updates on maintenance needs, building concerns, or significant issues to the Church Council. 6.
Special Projects:
o Assist in the setup and takedown of seasonal decorations, including Advent, Christmas, Easter, and other church-related events. o Oversee the care of memorials and other special gifts related to the building and grounds. 7.
General Administrative Duties:
o Keep records of maintenance and repair work performed, as well as any purchases or expenditures related to church upkeep. o Work with outside contractors when necessary for specialized tasks (e.g., plumbing, electrical repairs). Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in maintenance, custodial work, or facilities management is a plus.
  • Prior experience in building maintenance or custodial work, preferably in a church or similar setting.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and a positive attitude toward service.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, as well as perform physical tasks (e.g., setting up chairs, cleaning, and basic repairs).
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a willingness to engage with church members and visitors in a friendly, helpful manner.
  • Successful completion of PA Child Protection Background Clearances/Screenings (to be repeated at regular intervals).
Pay:
$18.00 - $20.00 per hour
