We are a growing civil and geotechnical engineering firm headquartered in Beckley, WV, with deep roots in the coal, natural gas, and energy sectors across southern West Virginia and the broader Appalachian basin. We are seeking a motivated Civil Engineering Designer to join our team and support a broad range of energy-related civil design projects — from surface mine infrastructure and preparation plant facilities to natural gas pipeline corridors, well pad development, and land reclamation. If you have a passion for working in the energy industry and want hands-on design experience in a collaborative small-firm setting, this is the role for you. What you'll do: Prepare civil design plans for energy-sector projects including surface mine facilities, coal preparation plants, natural gas well pads, compressor stations, and pipeline infrastructure using AutoCAD Civil 3D or Carlson products Develop grading plans, haul road and access road designs, stormwater management systems, and erosion and sediment control plans for mine and energy sites Perform engineering calculations for drainage, hydrology, cut-and-fill volumes, and sediment pond sizing under the direction of a licensed engineer Assist with preparation of permit applications and regulatory submittals forWV DEP, SMCRA, USACE
Section 404/401, NPDES, and other applicable agencies Support reclamation plan development, bond calculation exhibits, and post-mining land use design for surface mine and energy sites Coordinate with survey, geotechnical, mining, and environmental staff to integrate multi-discipline data into cohesive plan sets Conduct field visits to active mine and energy project sites across southern WV for site verification, data collection, and construction observation Develop quantity estimates, cost opinions, and technical specifications for energy infrastructure projects What you'll need to have: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field 2 to 8 years of civil design experience — we welcome both developing designers and mid-career professionals with energy or extractive industry backgrounds Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D or Carlson products — experience with either platform is fully accepted and valued EIT certification preferred; candidates actively pursuing the FE exam will also be considered Working knowledge of civil design fundamentals including grading, drainage, stormwater management, and earthwork Ability to interpret survey data, topographic maps, geotechnical reports, and regulatory documents common to the energy and mining industries Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment Valid driver's license and comfort accessing active mine and energy project sites across rugged, mountainous terrain It would be nice for you to have: Prior experience on coal mining, natural gas, pipeline, or other extractive industry civil projects in Appalachia Familiarity with SMCRA permitting, WV DEP regulations, and NPDES stormwater requirements for mining and energy sites West Virginia PE license or active pursuit of licensure Experience with GIS mapping, HEC-HMS/HEC-RAS hydrology modeling, or sediment pond design Experience with MicroStation OpenRoads or additional Carlson suite modules beyond core civil design What we offer: Competitive salary commensurate with experience Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with company contribution Paid time off and holidays PE exam fee reimbursement and licensure support Mentorship from licensed PEs and direct career developmentPay:
