Job Description

SUMMARY Coordinate total nursing care for patients using nursing standards and the nursing process; following Maternal Health / Newborn Nursing Standards. Participate in patient and family teaching; provide leadership working cooperatively with other health care providers in a team oriented maternal health setting.
JOB DUTIES
Maintains communication and promotes cooperation inter and intra-departmentally both vertically and horizontally. Coordinates maternal / newborn health plan of care with physician and maternal / newborn health team. Provides information to staff. Communicates with and serves as a liaison between nursing/patient/patient's family/ significant other/physician and the surrounding community. Works with Manager to establish the short

Participates in Hiring, orientation, scheduling and evaluations, counsels, and recommends the termination of assigned staff with the assistance of Manager & Human Resources. Assures that the medical orders and patients plan of care is carried out promptly and efficiently. Provides and supervises direct patient care. Act on identified problems and/or situations and provide feedback. Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives. Seeks assistance from appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems. Directs, supervises, delegates and evaluates nursing care provided to the patients by using professional skills and judgments as required. Ensures that patient care is provided according to policy, procedure, patient care standards on his/her unit. Ensures that care is documented accurately on patient record and plan of care. Coordinates or institutes emergency measures for all codes and disasters occurring on her/his unit. Collaborates with physicians in planning patient's plan of care. Demonstrates cost conscious use of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in optimum condition. Assists with responsibility for unit fiscal management. Is knowledgeable and supports Guest Relations policies and programs. Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives. Identifies staff development needs and re-credentialing needs and works with Manager to coordinate programs to meet requirements. Functions as a clinical and leadership resource to guide and validate the independent decision making of the staff. Attends, coordinates and participates in unit meetings as directed and as needed with staff or provides written communication that provides feedback from staff to nursing coordinator and vice versa. Participates in the orientation of new staff and in the clinical experience of staff and students. Participates in training of new staff in maternal / newborn health and management of the maternal health or newborn patient. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing. Current State Nursing License. BSN preferred. At least five years' recent clinical experience in maternal/newborn health field preferred. Ability to coordinate the patient care unit. Must be able to use the following skills in
Accountabilities/ Competencies:
conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of peers, interviewing, assisting with budgeting process, and cost containment skills. Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases. May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material. Adherence to Maternal / Newborn Health Nursing Guidelines and use of specialty personal protective equipment is required per hospital policy and procedure.
