Job Title:
3rd Shift CNC Machinist Job Description This 3rd shift CNC Machinist role involves setting up and operating a variety of CNC machines, including boring mills and 3- or 5-axis mills and lathes, to produce precision components for the automotive, aerospace, and medical industries. You will work with tight tolerances, perform quality checks, and make program edits to ensure parts meet exact specifications. The position requires strong technical skills with CNC controls, tooling, and measurement equipment, as well as the ability to interpret blueprints and maintain consistent accuracy throughout production. Responsibilities Set up and operate various CNC machines, including boring mills, 3-axis and 5-axis mills, and lathes, based on production needs. Change out tools as necessary and select proper tooling for each job to achieve desired finishes and tolerances. Secure and set up metal workpieces correctly before running parts to ensure safe and accurate machining. Edit CNC programs as required to optimize machining processes and correct issues during production. Understand and operate CNC controls, specifically Fanuc controls, to run and adjust machining operations. Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine machining requirements and part specifications. Use precision measuring tools, including micrometers and calipers, to perform in-process and final quality checks on completed parts. Machine parts to tight tolerances for automotive, aerospace, and medical industry applications. Zero out X, Y, and Z axes before starting each new job to ensure accurate machine positioning. Perform tool touch-offs and set proper tooling heights from the X, Y, and Z axes prior to machining. Monitor machine performance during operation and make adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency. Maintain a clean and organized work area around machines while working in a grease- and dirt-prone environment. Collaborate with team members and follow established processes and procedures learned during initial training. Essential Skills Minimum of 5 years of experience setting up and editing programs on a boring mill or 3- or 5-axis mill. Hands-on experience as a CNC machinist in a production or job shop environment. Ability to perform CNC machine setup, including fixturing, tooling, and zeroing axes. Proficiency with Fanuc controls or other CNC programming/control systems. Experience performing programming edits using Visi, WorkNC, or Mastercam. Strong blueprint reading skills to interpret dimensions, tolerances, and features. Ability to machine parts to tight tolerances for high-precision applications. Proficient use of precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers. Ability to perform tool touch-offs and set proper tooling height from the X, Y, and Z axes. Capability to zero out X, Y, and Z axes before starting each new job. Familiarity with operating horizontal boring mills and horizontal CNC equipment. Solid understanding of machining processes on mills, lathes, and boring mills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with CNC machining for automotive, aerospace, or medical industry parts. Experience using software or systems related to VISI or similar machining tools. Comfort working with large equipment, including overhead cranes and hi-lo (forklift) operations. Ability to adapt to working on different types of CNC machines based on production needs. Willingness to train on first shift initially and then transition to a permanent 3rd shift schedule. Strong attention to detail and commitment to performing thorough quality checks. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is on a night shift schedule, working Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Initial training takes place on first shift, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., until you are comfortable with processes and equipment before moving to 3rd shift. The work takes place in a machine shop environment with grease, dirt, and large industrial equipment. You will work around CNC machines, boring mills, mills, and lathes, and may work with overhead cranes and hi-lo equipment to move large parts and tooling. The environment is typical of a heavy machining facility, with a focus on safety, precision, and efficient production. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wayland, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
