Job Description
We seek a Music Director to lead the orchestra in the fulfillment of its musical potential. SCS, now in its 6th decade, comprises roughly 50 non-auditioned amateur and semiprofessional instrumentalists and performs 3-4 ambitious free concerts a year, with 24-28 rehearsals/season, mostly on Sundays. SCS has a particular commitment to promoting new music through 2 annual traditions: Commissioning and performing a professional composition. Mentoring and performing works of local high school and/or college students. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellent musicianship and conducting skills, deep knowledge of orchestral repertoire, experience and adaptability for leading musicians across a range of skill levels, effective leadership, strong communication with players, and efficient organizational ability. The Music Director will participate in selecting the commissioned composer and supporting and performing the compositions of regional students. Passion for community engagement through music and a commitment to fostering artistic growth within the ensemble.

Select appropriate repertoire that challenges players while appealing to the community, working with the Music Librarian and Personnel Manager, in the summer before the start of the season. Conduct rehearsals with energy and clarity, providing constructive feedback to enhance musicians' skills and ensemble cohesion. Foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere that promotes teamwork and mutual respect. Concerts and rehearsals are in Greenwall Auditorium, Bennington College. Develop and implement rehearsal schedules with consideration of players' time and logistics, with effective communication regarding expectations, ensuring effective preparation for upcoming performances. Select a composer to commission annually and perform the commissioned work. Facilitate the performance of student compositions. Engage soloists and collaborators, in conjunction with the Personnel Manager and the Programming Committee. Assist the Music Librarian in obtaining access to scores and parts. Serve as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors, present a Music Director's report at meetings, and participate in activities of the Board. Collaborate with event organizers to plan concert programs, outreach activities, and community engagement initiatives.Pay:
