Exempt Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all daily accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This role owns the monthly close process, financial statements, internal controls, and compliance, and leads the accounting team across AP, AR, GL, and cost accounting functions. The Controller partners with department managers, operations leadership, and the VP of Finance to deliver financial insights that support operational performance, costing, and departmental KPIs.
Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Accounting
  • Own the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, reporting, and variance analysis.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all general ledger accounts, maintaining appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Analyze financial results against budgets, forecasts, and historical performance, and communicate findings to leadership. Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Establish, maintain, and continuously improve internal accounting controls and procedures.
  • Lead coordination of external audits, tax planning support, and regulatory reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements. Budgeting & Financial Planning
  • Lead the annual budgeting and financial forecasting processes in partnership with the VP of Finance.
  • Provide financial analysis on performance trends, margin drivers, and cost structure.
  • Prepare and present reports to leadership that support strategic and operational decision-making. Team Leadership & Process Improvement
  • Manage and develop the accounting team, including staff responsible for AP, AR, GL, and cost accounting.
  • Set priorities, manage workflows, and ensure accountability across accounting functions.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development guidance to team members.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA preferred.
  • 8-12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership and team management responsibilities.
  • Experience in manufacturing, food production, agriculture, or a related industry strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with inventory and cost accounting required.
  • Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Experience with ERP systems (specific platform experience a plus — customize as needed).
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with financial reporting or BI tools a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with inventory and cost accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • High attention to detail balanced with the ability to see the bigger picture.
  • Effective cross-functional communicator — comfortable working with operations, management, and executive leadership.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and hold a team accountable.
  • Does not own or maintain routine contact with swine, birds, cattle or other egg processing
