1 years A Correctional Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides essential healthcare to inmates within correctional facilities, focusing on medication administration, health assessments, and chronic condition management. They work closely with security staff to ensure safety while treating a population often experiencing poor health
Core Responsibilities Medication Administration:
Administering medication, including insulin, and verifying inmate compliance (e.g., checking for "cheeking" or disposing of pills).
Health Assessments:
Performing intake screenings, taking vital signs, and assessing inmates for illnesses or injuries .
Chronic Care:
Managing acute and chronic conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, or diabetes.
Emergency Care:
Responding to medical emergencies within the facility.
Documentation:
Maintaining accurate medical records and tracking health changes.
Safety Protocol:
Working with security officers to ensure a secure environment, prioritizing safety at all times.
Key Requirements & Skills License:
Active LPN/LVN license in the state of employment.
Attributes:
High level of patience, tolerance, and empathy, with the ability to remain objective and unbiased.
Safety Focus:
Understanding of correctional facility security protocols.
Independence:
Ability to work with limited immediate supervision, often managing a large volume of patients. Common Work Environment Correctional LPNs work in prisons, jails, and juvenile detention centers, which involves high-security environments, direct interaction with inmates, and a high-volume, fast-paced setting
