Job Description

Under direction, this position provides the verbatim official record of proceedings as provided by law before the Superior Court by use of stenographic or voice writing equipment and performs related duties as required. Court Reporters serve at the pleasure of the Judges of the Superior Court and under the administrative direction of the Court Executive Officer. Take and transcribe verbatim statements of all Court proceedings often of a technical nature and at a high rate of speed Identify speakers properly, and note the introduction of exhibits or evidence Prepare transcriptions in proper legal form Meet court-fixed deadlines for transcriptions Provides immediate readback of all portions of the records as requested Certifies the accuracy of court transcripts Files official transcripts Provide at own expense all necessary equipment and materials to produce the verbatim record, pursuant to California Rules of Court, Rule 10.810 Perform other related duties as required Reasonable accommodation will be made, when requested, and as determined by the Court Executive Officer to be appropriate under applicable law. Essential duties may vary as directed by the Court Executive Officer or designee.
Education :
Possession of High School Diploma or G.E.D. Possess and maintain a certificate and be in good standing as a Certified Court Reporter issued by the State of California or evidence of successful testing in accordance with the Government Code Section 69942.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a Superior Court setting Ability to take stenographic dictation at a speed of 220 words per minute Type at a speed of 50 words per minute
KNOWLEDGE
Statutes or Rules of Court relating to court reporting services Legal, medical, and administrative terminology, phraseology, documents, and procedures Grammar, spelling, business English, vocabulary, and punctuation Courtroom procedures and protocol ABILITY Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges and court staff Maintain confidential information where legal standards require Deal professionally and courteously with the bar and the public in general Use correct English and proofread accurately Follow oral and written instructions
