  • Are you looking ahead to next tax season and realizing you can't see yourself staying at your current firm?
  • Are you ready to step into a role where your work has far more impact, gives you greater responsibilities, and accelerates your career much faster than your present firm ever could — including a clear 2-3 year path to partnership instead of waiting 5-10 years?
  • Would you like to be at a place where your ideas are heard, your initiative is valued, and your leadership directly influences how an office runs?
  • Would you like to be part of a firm with a dynamic ownership team that is dedicated to creating a different kind of CPA firm — one focused on overall client financial success, not just doing compliance work?
  • Would you like to join a firm that plans to open additional offices — and wants the person in this role to eventually take over leadership of the Portland office as the owners expand?
  • Would you like to be at a place where you can think like an owner, act like a leader, and see the impact of your work every single day? If you answered yes to all the above, The Jones Group may be the right place for you.
  • About The Jones Group The Jones Group is a modern, advisory‑driven CPA firm led by two young, dynamic owners who acquired a long‑established Portland practice to implement a different kind of vision.
The original firm was founded in 1959 and has served generations of loyal clients — many with relationships spanning 20+ years. When Matt Jones, CPA, and Garrett Paul purchased the practice, they set out to transform it into a non‑traditional accounting firm — one that looks beyond compliance and focuses on the overall financial success of its clients. Staff consistently describe Matt and Garrett as leaders with strong integrity, a clear ethos, and a genuine commitment to helping people grow. The culture is collaborative, supportive, and team‑oriented — a place where you're not a cog in a machine, not a production robot, and not lost in layers of hierarchy. Newer team members say the firm has lived up to every expectation set during hiring: everyone helps each other, support is real, and the partners follow through on what they say they will do. Monthly one‑on‑one meetings focus on personal goals and long‑term development, giving staff meaningful ownership of their careers. The firm also invests heavily in its digital presence, with a website and social media footprint that is far more active and polished than most CPA firms today. This reflects the ownership — two young, modern, forward‑thinking professionals who understand branding, client engagement, and the importance of meeting clients where they already are. The Jones Group isn't just providing tax services — they are selling entrepreneurial transformation, operational clarity, and business coaching. Their advisory‑driven model helps business owners understand their numbers, make better decisions, and build stronger companies. Weekly Thursday lunches and a family‑like environment reinforce the firm's emphasis on connection, collaboration, and shared success. The firm is expanding into multiple locations, and the Portland office is central to that growth.
  • About the Role — Tax Manager The Jones Group's evolution under new ownership — combined with strong growth and upcoming expansion — has created a unique opportunity to bring in a Tax Manager who will play a central role in the future of the Portland office.
The underlying practice has deep roots and long‑standing client relationships; the new leadership is bringing fresh energy, modern processes, and a broader advisory focus. This is a builder's role, not a maintenance role. The office is small but high‑volume, which means you will learn quickly, take on broad responsibilities, and have a direct impact on clients, staff, and the direction of the practice. After a demanding tax season, the owners are actively improving processes and systems — and they want this hire to help shape cleaner, stronger workflows moving forward. The Jones Group is seeking a hands‑on Tax Manager who can review staff work and prepare complex returns, manage the Portland office, mentor staff, and serve as the primary on‑site technical and leadership presence. You will work directly with the partners to strengthen processes, elevate the team, and position the office for continued expansion. This is a role for someone who enjoys both doing and reviewing, thrives in a fast‑paced environment, and wants meaningful influence without the layers of a large organization. For the right individual, this role offers a clear pathway to partnership within 2-3 years.
  • Key Responsibilities Tax Preparation, Review & Planning
  • Review ~70% of returns; prepare the most complex business and individual returns
  • Conduct and review tax research; identify planning opportunities
  • Prepare and review tax projections and multi‑year planning analyses

  • Serve as primary point of contact for assigned clients
  • Lead client meetings to discuss compliance outcomes and planning opportunities
  • Advise clients on tax implications of financial decisions and business strategies
  • Identify proactive tax‑saving opportunities and long‑term planning strategies
  • Build and maintain strong, long‑term client relationships Leadership & Office Management
  • Manage workflow, assignments, and missing information
  • Mentor and support staff
  • Review staff work and elevate review quality
  • Handle all office responsibilities below partner level
  • Improve processes, systems, and client experience
  • As you gain experience, become the on‑site lead of the Portland office
  • Our Requirements Are Clear
  • CPA required (or within 6 months of completion)
  • 4-5+ years of CPA firm tax experience
  • 2 years of CPA firm staff supervisory experience
  • Strong technical depth across business and individual returns
  • Comfortable working with small, closely held businesses
  • Strong knowledge of Oregon state and local tax codes
  • Ability to both prepare and review — this is a hands‑on role
  • Proven ability to mentor and elevate staff
  • Comfort communicating with clients, including outside business hours when needed
  • High integrity, strong ownership mindset, and a collaborative, team‑oriented approach
  • Desire to build, improve, and take responsibility for an office
  • Ability to thrive in a culture built on trust, autonomy, accountability, and no micromanagement
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $110,000
  • $150,000 (commensurate with experience)
  • Annual discretionary bonus
  • Partner track in 2-3 years (commensurate with performance)
  • Health, dental, vision 100% paid for the individual
  • 3 weeks PTO + 1 week sick time
  • Extra paid time off around Thanksgiving/Christmas
  • CPE paid 100% and bonus upon achieving CPA if still a candidate
  • Private enclosed office
  • 401(k)
  • Why This Role Matters The Portland office is entering a pivotal chapter as the firm modernizes processes, expands into new markets, and builds a non‑traditional advisory model on top of a 65‑year legacy.
The right Tax Manager will play a central role in shaping that direction — taking on complex work, leading the team, strengthening client relationships, and becoming the face of the Portland office. This is a place where people feel lucky to work — where leadership is cooperative, engaging, and genuinely different from traditional CPA firms. The right person will help strengthen systems, elevate the team, and contribute to a culture built on integrity, support, and follow‑through.
