Job Description

Summary (Internal Applicants Only) Pottawattamie County Secondary Roads is announcing the Internal hiring of Culvert Crew Team Leader. The incumbent is responsible for the operation and general direction of equipment and crews, for maintenance and construction of road and bridge projects. This individual is further responsible to maintain the equipment assigned to them and their crew. Essential Functions Works in a manner conducive to teamwork, with respect for the public, their fellow employees and the safety of all. Operates construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, single axle dump truck, tandem axle dump truck, tractor/trailer combinations, motor graders, tractors, scrapers, bulldozers, excavators, draglines, mowers, rollers, wheel loaders and skid steers. Assists Foreman in a leading capacity and in training other employees in the operation of heavy equipment. Is in responsible charge of their crew, their crew's performance, and final product. Hauls road construction/maintenance materials, supplies and equipment to and from work sites. Performs manual labor including, but not limited to cutting brush, installing, maintaining and removing tire chains, snowplow blades and sanders on trucks, adjusting brakes, patching potholes, tamping backfill, changing ties, repairing handrails on bridges, repairing planks on bridges, pouring and working concrete and fence remove, repair and reconstruction. Performs snow removal operations. Provides traffic control in construction and maintenance zones or emergency situations. Assists in the installation of roadway and driveway culverts. Performs routine scheduled maintenance on assigned vehicle including, but not limited to, changing the oil, filters and other engine fluids, greasing the vehicle, checking tires, lug nuts and washing the interior and exterior surfaces. Completes a written record of the maintenance services performed on each piece of equipment and visually inspects the condition of equipment before and after operation to determine if repair or maintenance is needed. Completes written work records including, but not limited to, time sheets, monthly cost sheets, rock haul records and equipment maintenance forms. Operates power and hand tools in the performance of duties. Performs maintenance and housekeeping activities of County buildings and grounds when necessary. Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates and works in lower classifications as needed. Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability A desire and ability to recommend and plan work for management consideration. Knowledgeable and experienced in the completion of road, culvert or bridge projects. Knowledge and ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner according to traffic laws and regulations. Ability to direct employees regarding the occupational hazards involved and the proper safety precautions to be used around assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, projects and materials. The character to ask questions and seek help when duties are unclear or appear unsafe. Ability to operate hand and power tools in a safe manner. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the proper operation and use of assigned vehicles, equipment, tools and materials. Experienced in dump truck operations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to read English and to follow a series of oral and written instructions and maps. Ability to write English and accurately complete required records and reports. Ability to work independently without constant supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the general public. Ability to work independently, prioritize work, meet deadlines and make decisions on the basis of established policies and procedures. Essential Education, Certification, and/or Licenses Must possess and maintain a valid State of Iowa, Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker and air brake endorsement.
