2026-2027 School Year Split Custodian
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position:
Custodian, Evening shift 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Michael E. Smith Middle School +
South Hadley High School Job Goals:
1. To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop 2. To maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times
Supervision:
Reports to the Head Custodian and the
Facilities Director Experience and Training:
1. High school diploma or G.E.D. required 2. Prior experience as a school custodian or the equivalent preferred 3. Massachusetts driver's license required 4. Ability to work effectively as part of a large custodial team 5. Must be able to comprehend and follow verbal and written instruction appropriate to custodial activities 6. Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director of Facilities may find appropriate
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Keep building and premises clean at all times 2. Shovel, snow blow and/or sand walks, and steps, as appropriate 3. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy 4. Raise and lower the United States flag at appropriate times, if needed 5. Sweep classrooms daily and dust furniture, chalkboards, vacuum rugs, etc. 6. Clean corridors after school each day 7. Scrub, wash down, and disinfect toilet floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily 8. Wash all windows 9. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation 10. Make minor building repairs 11. Report all major repairs needed promptly to his/her immediate supervisor, who will inform the Facilities Director 12. Report immediately to his/her supervisor any damage to school property 13. Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the Facilities Director or Head Custodian 14. Assume responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety or other reasons, are turned off 15. Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, including a summer cleaning program 16. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities as directed by the Facilities Director 17. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste 18. Substitute or assist in other buildings as directed by the Facilities Director 19. Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe conditions 20. Assume responsibility for the general security of the buildings 21. Operate specialized equipment, such as floor machines and snow blowers 22. Perform other duties as assigned by the
Facilities Director Physical Requirements:
The position requires the delivery of a full range of custodial services to the public. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting, and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending and twisting. This position also requires frequent pulling and pushing materials and the use of hand and power tools. Occasionally, crawling may be necessary. The position requires lifting of objects of 50 pounds on a frequent basis and over 50 pounds occasionally.
Environmental Conditions:
The Custodian is required on occasion to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow and hot/cold extremes. He/she is also exposed to gasoline and/or diesel fumes, cleaning chemicals, and high noise levels. The Custodian is expected to have proper weather gear, rubber gloves and steel toe protection when necessary.
