Job Description

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming church facilities that support worship, ministry programs, youth activities, community use, and special events. The role combines routine custodial duties with seasonal outdoor grounds care and is structured around prioritized service levels rather than uniform cleaning across all spaces. This is a part-time, year-round position.
Work Hours & Schedule:
Typical weekly hours: approximately 20 hours/week, Mon-Fri Schedule includes weekday daytime hours and with occasional evening and weekend hours aligned with services, youth programming, and events.
Supervision & Evaluation:
Reports to the Sr. Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations Team. Participates in a 90-day probationary evaluation and annual performance reviews thereafter.
Core Responsibilities:
Daily / High Use Tasks
  • Clean and restock restrooms (toilets, sinks, mirrors, trash, floors), with heightened attention for worship days and during youth or community activities.
  • Maintain cleanliness of lobbies, corridors, and entryways, including trash removal and spot cleaning.
  • Perform light cleaning and reset of the gym/fellowship hall following daily use.
  • Conduct light kitchen cleanup on days of use (trash removal, surface wipe down, floor spot cleaning). Weekly Tasks
  • Clean and reset classrooms (approximately 6-8) used for small groups, homeschool activities, and ministry programs.
  • Clean and reset conference rooms (approximately 3-4) following scheduled use.
  • Perform nursery cleaning, including floor care, trash removal, and surface sanitization following health and safety practices.
  • Light cleaning of the worship space/sanctuary following services.
  • Conduct weekly deeper cleaning of the gym/fellowship hall (floor care beyond daily resets).
  • Perform deeper kitchen cleaning (floors, sinks, trash containers).
Periodic / As
Needed Tasks
  • Refill soap dispensers, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Keep track of cleaning supplies, restroom essentials, and other supplies. Inform Trustees when supplies need to be reordered.
  • Support cleaning before or after special events, rentals, or expanded programming.
  • Complete seasonal deep cleaning projects (windows, baseboards, storage areas) as scheduled.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for services or events as requested. Outdoor Grounds Responsibilities (Seasonal)
  • Sweep walkways during spring/fall.
  • Assist with snow removal from walkways and salting during winter months as needed. Mechanical & Safety Responsibilities
  • Perform minor facility maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and monthly AED checks.
  • Report significant maintenance or safety concerns to the Trustees.
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations, including proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment. Performance Success Measures Successful performance is defined by consistency, prioritization, and communication, rather than completion of all tasks at all times.
  • Appropriately prioritizes high-use and health-sensitive spaces when time is limited.
  • Communicates proactively when increased facility usage, weather, or events affect workload.
  • Demonstrates care and stewardship of church facilities in support of the church's mission.
Qualifications:
High school diploma. Prior custodial or facilities experience preferred. Physical ability to stand, bend, lift, and move equipment. Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently. Effective communication skills. Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Positive demeanor and alignment with the mission and values of the church.
