Job Title:
Custom Truck Building Technician Job Description The Custom Truck Building Technician will use strong mechanical and welding skills to build, customize, and upfit trucks, primarily for specialized applications such as the railroad industry. This role blends approximately 20% welding on steel and aluminum with 80% hands-on assembly, installation, and repair work on truck beds, rear ends, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. The technician works closely with other team members to deliver high-quality, custom-built trucks that meet exact specifications and performance standards. Responsibilities Perform welding on steel and aluminum components, including front-end structures to support and distribute weight. Install, assemble, and customize hydraulic systems on custom-built trucks. Read and interpret electrical schematics to complete wiring and electrical assembly tasks. Install and customize electrical features such as truck beds, headlights, and other utility truck components. Assemble, repair, and modify custom-built rear ends and beds for trucks, including large semi-tractors and medium-duty trucks. Use hand tools and power tools to perform mechanical assembly, mechanical repairs, and general labor tasks as needed. Strip wires, install pumps, and complete related mechanical and electrical installation work. Follow blueprints, drawings, and build specifications to ensure all custom builds meet quality and safety standards. Collaborate with other technicians to complete projects efficiently and meet production timelines. Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues and perform repairs or adjustments to resolve problems. Maintain tools, welding gear, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Continuously learn new techniques, technologies, and methods to improve craftsmanship and productivity. Work Environment The role is based in a garage-style mechanic shop environment similar to a large-scale automotive service center, but focused on heavy-duty vehicles. Work is performed on-site using a full range of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and shop machinery to build and customize trucks. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional opportunities to stay up to an hour after the shift to complete projects when needed.
