Job Description

Wild Roots Market in Felton and Boulder Creek, are independently owned and operated, serving the San Lorenzo Valley community. We support local farmers, organic food purveyors and artisan food producers. We offer those great local products and a full line of Natural Foods to the San Lorenzo Valley community. We are the first CCOF certified Natural Foods Grocery Store in the United States. We strive to provide high quality, healthy prepared foods in our deli and grab-n-go operations. With a commitment to the highest quality ingredients and exceptional customer service our kitchen and deli offer great meals for taking home or eating away from home. We need someone who is Customer Service oriented and can motivate others. We are looking for an individual who can make a commitment to sustainable values and to us by becoming a member of our Deli Team. This is an hourly, full time position that includes weekends. Discount card, medical and dental benefits (FT) and gain sharing (FT) available.
Purpose:
To oversee deli staff, production of items, and promotion of deli service department.
Status:
Reports to Company Management, Store Manager, and works with
Food Service Manager FLSA Status:
Non-exempt Responsibilities:
1.
DELI DUTIES
a. Hands on customer service in deli department. Including making sandwiches and serving from the case. b. Maintain a high level of cleanliness throughout the deli. Maintain an aesthetically pleasing, well-balanced deli case, including vegan, vegetarian, and meat dishes. c. Communicate with food service manager regarding Grab n Go and Bakery item orders. d. Ensure accurate, uniform signage is in place. Communicate with Marketing Manager as needed for new signs. e. Plan attractive displays that are fully stocked, rotated to ensure freshness, and give an appearance of abundance. 2.
PRODUCTION COOK
a. Prep and cook items needed for Deli Case and soup. b. Follow all company's recipes and portion sizes when preparing foods following exact specifications. c. Maintain inventory levels of items needed for production. d. Clean vegetables, fruits, and berries for salads, as needed. e. Prepare dressings for salads. f. Able to use stove and convection oven to cook recipes. g. Manage production of items for deli case, soup, and Grab n Go case for all shifts h. Follow the FIFO rotation system (First In, First Out). Covers, labels, and dates all leftover foods accordingly. Utilizes leftover foods before opening new products. i. Inspect food and food preparation; including measuring temperatures throughout the preparation process to maintain quality and sanitation by the FDA and local health departmental codes and company's stringent standards. j. Work with meat and produce department to utilize culls in recipes as to not waste food. k. Some dishwashing is required. 3.
MANAGEMENT
a. Perform other tasks assigned by management. b. Execute and maintain all Santa Cruz County Health Department requirements. c. Assist in hiring, performance reviews, and terminations of deli staff. d. Train new hires in deli and kitchen. e. Create schedules for deli staff to ensure there are always enough workers to meet the demand, particularly for daily rush, while also maintaining the labor budget. Troubleshoot staff shortages so all shifts are covered. f. Work with Food Service Manager to develop costing for deli case, grab & go recipes. Understands how to manage the department margin. An understanding of inventory and waste control procedures. Understand the difference between mark up and margin. g. Must attend management meetings. h. Meet department goals of sales growth, margin, and labor budget. 4.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
a. Respond personally to customer questions and complaints. b. Expected to have a positive "can-do" attitude; able to treat customers and co-workers with respect; and easily adjust to changes in the workplace.
QUALIFICATIONS
§ Culinary degree or equivalent 2-3 years job experience. § Experience in production cooking preferred. § Ability to prepare foods for different diet restrictions, including vegan and vegetarian. § Natural Foods food service experience preferred. § Knowledge of sanitary food handling and preparation techniques. § Familiarity with natural food, nutrition, and food sensitivities. § CA Food Handlers Certification. § Supervisory experience, 2 or more years
  • hiring, training, evaluating, directing.
§ Excellent organizational and time management skills. § Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a friendly nature. § Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality. § Ability to work as a positive team member. § Willing to work a flexible schedule § Experience delegating tasks and maintaining fast speed of service. § Experience serving the public. § Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands and follow through on commitments. § Communications skills
  • good listener, clear instructions, ability to coach in difficult situations.
§ Must be well organized and pay attention to detail. § Basic computer skills § Advanced math skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
§ Must be able to move and/or lift up to 50 lbs. § Must be able to stand for long periods of time. § Must be able to work in cold conditions, in a walk-in refrigerator. § Must be able to work around heat from facility appliances. § Must be able to use small appliances and sharp tools in the kitchen, including knives. § Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. § Occasionally required to climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. § Standing, stooping, repetitive motion, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
