Position Details Position Summary:
The Deputy Police Chief assists the Chief of Police in the supervision, administration, and daily operation of the Police Department. This position helps formulate and coordinate departmental planning, policies, goals, procedures, training initiatives, personnel management, and community-oriented policing efforts. The Deputy Police Chief helps maintain continuity of command in the absence of the Chief of Police and works collaboratively with sworn and non-sworn personnel to promote professionalism, accountability, and public trust.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist and advise the Chief of Police in developing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, goals, and strategic initiatives. Support command oversight of patrol, investigations, emergency response, training, and administrative functions. Provide leadership and supervision to sworn and non-sworn employees and help ensure adherence to departmental values, management principles, and professional standards. Participate in the investigation and resolution of resident and employee concerns, complaints, and operational issues. Help plan and implement training programs, performance expectations, and organizational development efforts. Promote modern, data-informed policing practices, crime prevention strategies, and meaningful community engagement. Assist with budget, personnel, resource allocation, and intergovernmental coordination as assigned. Represent the department at meetings, community events, and other public forums as needed. Maintain continuity of command and operational leadership in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified law enforcement officer in the State of Illinois, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification as required. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or a related field; advanced coursework or a master's degree is preferred. At least 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including supervisory and administrative leadership experience. Demonstrated success working with the public to build confidence through transparency, communication, and accountability. Strong management, leadership, administrative, and problem-solving skills, with excellent oral and written communication abilities.
