Job Description
Summer Camp Art Teaching Artist & Set Design Mr. D's Music Club Oakland, CA Job Details Temporary | Part-time | Seasonal $25 - $30 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Teaching visual & performing arts Project planning Working with children Teaching visual art Teaching Camp Full Job Description Mr. D's Music Club is a multi-award-winning performing arts after-school and summer camp program for kids, and we are looking for an art teaching artist to join us! Mr. D's Music Club encourages kids to explore their creativity and discover what artistically inspires them. Our programs focus on fun rather than perfection. We want kids to feel comfortable taking artistic risks, trying new things, and building confidence through creative expression. While campers learn artistic techniques through hands-on activities, rehearsals, creative projects, and performance preparation, our approach is rooted in creativity, encouragement, and engagement rather than overly formal lessons. Learning and having fun go hand in hand as the camp works toward the Friday performance. One of our sayings is, "If it feels like school, we are doing something wrong." The ideal candidate will be excited to embrace a playful, supportive, and highly interactive approach to arts education. We value encouragement, flexibility, creativity, and active participation while still working toward meaningful goals and a successful Friday performance. Our camps are high-energy, engaging, and camp-oriented, and we look for teaching artists who can help create an environment where kids feel excited to participate, take creative risks, and have fun. Summer Camp - Design and plan a weekly art project that aligns with the camp's theme. The project should emphasize the finished products to be used as the stage backdrop for Friday's performance. The camp art program is focused on large-scale projects (sizes vary by project), and each camper creates their own piece of art to take home with them after the performance. Each week, the project should have a unique element, such as using different mediums, introducing a new technique, etc. We aim to be as sustainable as possible, so be open to reusing materials, provide only the materials needed for the project and even for the specific day, monitor how the campers use the supplies, manage the quantities used, and teach the campers art etiquette and material management. We provide all art materials and have a budget for new materials if needed. Planning and submitting requests for materials to arrive on time is crucial. Assist with planning the set design (aka backdrop) so staff can help create the vision you are trying to create with the art projects to complete the set design.
The ideal teaching artist candidate:
Genuine interest in working with kids. 1-2 years of previous teaching, camp, or youth arts experience preferred. Has a great sense of humor and openness to having fun. Comfortable working in a playful, high-energy, camp-oriented environment. Does not take themselves too seriously and can laugh at themselves. Interested in creating engaging, large-scale, hands-on art projects for kids. Understands how to encourage creativity and confidence while still working toward meaningful artistic goals. Able to adapt quickly when an activity or project needs adjustment. Open to feedback and guidance to help maintain the culture, quality, and goals of the camp. Comfortable presenting projects each week to discuss logistics, troubleshoot challenges, and help streamline implementation. Ability to explain artistic concepts in kid-friendly ways, pace projects appropriately, and help campers succeed creatively. Understands that this role is highly hands-on and material-based. Teaching artists should feel comfortable working with physical art materials, preparing supplies, and managing projects in a camp environment. Understands that this is a seasonal, part-time role designed to complement artistic pursuits or other work. Additional opportunities may become available as the program grows.Minimum Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age or older. Experience creating and teaching art as an artist, student, educator, or active creative professional.
