Specialized Recreation Visual Arts Teaching Artist Center for Community Arts Walnut Creek, CA Job Details Contract $30 - $50 an hour 5 hours ago Qualifications Theater Creative writing Master's degree Bachelor's degree Classroom experience Lesson planning Studio Art Teaching Full Job Description Teaching Artists, Specialized Recreation The Center for Community Arts is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and community minded Visual Arts Teaching Artist to lead specialized recreation art classes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This class provides a supportive and enriching environment where students can develop creative skills through drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, and other traditional visual arts practices. The ideal candidate is an adaptable artist educator who can balance a fluid, responsive curriculum—supporting both multiweek, skill-building projects and student directed exploration for those who prefer independent creative work. This teaching artist will work alongside Specialized Recreation staff, who serve as classroom assistants.
Responsibilities Include:
Design and implement inclusive age-appropriate visual arts curriculum for adults with IDD Support a combination of structured, multiweek projects and open studio style independent work Provide individualized instruction, adapting materials and approach as needed Incorporate adaptive tools (grips, modified scissors, supports, etc.) into instruction Foster a welcoming, encouraging, and creatively stimulating classroom environment Collaborate with Specialized Recreation staff Communicate with program staff regarding classroom needs, curriculum plans, and student progress
Ideal Candidate:
Have a BA or MA in visual art, art education, art therapy or a related field—or equivalent professional experience Experienced teaching in community, adaptive, or special education settings (preferred but not required) Comfortable guiding artists of varying experience levels and communication styles Demonstrate patience, flexibility, and a strengths based teaching approachbased teaching approach Able to articulate artistic processes and support growth in both technical skill and creative voice Practicing artists with an active body of work
Hours and Compensation:
This is a contract teaching artist position. Compensation is provided through a 55% revenue split of all class registration fees.
