Our core principle is to provide access to long-term music engagement, serving low-income and disabled individuals, using music as a tool to foster true potential. Through our programs we provide access to more than 3,000 students in Chicago, of which more than two-thirds are in Chicago Public Schools. Approximately 70% come from economically-disadvantaged families and more than 30% have disabilities. As community arts educators and therapists, we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion as a crucial part of our work to ensure that our programming: helps all children experience interactions that nurture their full range of social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and linguistic abilities; presents a curriculum and programming that is bias-free and reflects and models fundamental principles of fairness and justice; is delivered by teaching artists and therapists who are skilled in the delivery of culturally responsive pedagogy and values all children for who they are and what they bring to our community of learners. Job Description We seek a Classroom Music teaching artist for all elementary grades (PreK-8) in a variety of ChiME partner schools throughout Chicago. Schedules vary depending on the partner school, but classes of 15-30 students each are typically held weekly during the school day. ChiME teaching artists use engaging and age-appropriate musical activities in service of the broader goals of fostering self-confidence, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, personal responsibility, and creative problem solving. Additionally, our teaching artists demonstrate proactivity, model patience and understanding, and seek to find win-win solutions. This is a part-time position with potential to increase to full-time. Travel to partner locations across the city is required, and access to reliable transportation is highly recommended.
The ideal candidate:
is interested in fostering growth of musical and non-musical skills among students has pedagogical knowledge and prior teaching experience with preschool and elementary school students, preferably in a classroom setting is energetic and enthusiastic when engaging with young students values diversity, is committed to anti-bias education, and is skilled in the delivery of culturally responsive pedagogy has musical abilities, including some vocal, instrumental (guitar/ukulele, piano, or percussion) and note-reading skills demonstrates effective planning, documentation, and communication with both students and colleagues is responsible, accountable, and reliable; strives for mutual victories; and seeks to understand others. Compensation Compensation for teaching ranges between $45 and $55 per hour and $17.00 per hour for meetings and training sessions. Travel to partner locations from ChiME is compensated at the official IRS rate. Artists who average more than 30 hours per week are eligible for ChiME's benefit package which covers 60% of benefits for employees and dependents, and also provides 100% coverage for long-term disability insurance.
