Calliope Women's Chorus is the second-oldest feminist women's choir in the country and the oldest group in the Twin Cities' Queer Music Consortium. Calliope Women's Chorus has a legacy extending 50 years: we have been helping women's voices be heard and amplifying messages of social justice while providing a welcoming community for LGBTQIA+ people and allies to make music together.
JOB SUMMARY
The Artistic Director of Calliope Women's Chorus provides leadership to the chorus in maintaining its goal of musical excellence by developing short and long term goals, facilitating learning music and improving choral and vocal skills, leading rehearsals, ensuring that music is accessible to all chorus members, conducting musical auditions, and conducting the chorus in all concerts and performances.
Primary Responsibilities:
Works with the Music Committee (or, in the absence of a committee, with the Board) to develop appropriate and artistic programs for the chorus. Facilities the process of selecting music appropriate to the skill level of the chorus in accordance with Calliope's mission and organizational goals. Develops and conducts an accessible process for auditioning potential new chorus members; works in collaboration with the Board to hold auditions bi-annually and communicate with prospective singers. Creates or procures part-tracks or other music-learning resources for all selected repertoire for each concert cycle in a timely fashion. Plans and leads effective and focused weekly rehearsals held Thursday evenings from 7-9pm that include warm-up, learning repertoire, occasional community-building activities, and discussion of music or relevant topics in a timely manner. Provides a written plan for each rehearsal in advance of each week. Ensures successful production of concerts and community performances,in collaboration with the Board and Calliope committees and chorus Members.
Including but not limited to:
scheduling, assisting with venue review and approval, communication with external collaborators for concerts and events such as venue staff or additionally contracted musicians, management and oversight of visual elements, scripting of spoken elements, assembly of written materials for programs, coordination of logistical details such as space and equipment use, etc. Fosters positive working relationships with the membership and Board of Directors, contributes to leadership of the organization through regular participation as ex-officio member in monthly Board meetings. Assists in strategic planning with the board and members of the chorus in ways including but not limited to:writing narratives as needed for concert projects and grant applications, working with the board of directors to position grant focus and assist with budget specifications for those grants. Assists with internal fundraising, outreach, and collaboration efforts. In conjunction with the board president, represents Calliope in local, national, and international choir organizations such as GALA Choruses, Sister Singers Network, QMC, etc, maintains communications with community partners in such organizations, and participates in outreach activities of the organization. Promote Calliope's positive impact and "Community Forward" reputation and visibility among Calliope alumni, friends of Calliope, audience members, and other funders. Plans internal Calliope events such as bi-annual retreats, occasional chorus training sessions, or educational workshops. Participates in other Calliope events such as fundraisers, social events, outreach events, and additional performances requested of Calliope from outside organizations. Fosters a positive working relationship and maintains clear communications with the Accompanist. Organizes and leads regular sectionals in collaboration with the Accompanist to improve the musicality of the choir. Leads by example to foster an environment that values inclusion, respect for others, a collaborative spirit, and supports a diversity of thoughts and lived experiences. Requirements Previous experience in choral conducting Ability to effectively lead choir rehearsals Ability and willingness to work with members who have a variety of musical skills including singers who cannot read music Ability and willingness to receive and respond to feedback Passion for the equity of the LGBTQIA+ community Physical requirements Able to move freely in a variety of settings•indoor/outdoor Review/evaluation process Annual Contract review in August upon renewal
Salary Monthly:
