  • Part-time Position Overview The Artistic Director of Glorystar Children's Chorus provides visionary and artistic leadership for a multi-ensemble youth choral program dedicated to musical excellence, character development, and community engagement.
As an Asian American-rooted organization, Glorystar is committed to celebrating cultural heritage while fostering cross-cultural understanding through choral music. This role oversees all artistic operations, including repertoire selection, rehearsals, performances, and singer development, while cultivating an inclusive environment that reflects and honors the diverse backgrounds of its singers. The Artistic Director works closely with administrative staff, teaching artists, and the Parent Support Association (PSA) to sustain Glorystar's tradition of artistic excellence and culturally meaningful programming. Position Expectations & Time Commitment Expected to be present at all scheduled rehearsals and major program events Serve as primary conductor for top ensembles (e.g., Concert Choir and Chamber groups) Approximately 20 hours per week, including: ~14 hours of planning, preparation, and administrative work ~6 hours on-site on Saturdays (typically 9:00 AM
  • 3:00 PM, depending on schedule) Additional time required during concert weeks, festivals, and special events Key ResponsibilitiesArtistic Leadership & Program Development Lead all conductors in selecting appropriate and excellent repertoire.
​,​ Lead and support conductors in weekly rehearsals, sectionals, and warm-ups, providing strong vocal pedagogy tailored to each ensemble. Lead and assist other conductors and the choir during performances, festivals, and outreachevents. Develop season programming, including Fall, Winter, and Spring concerts Lead long-term artistic planning, including new initiatives (e.g., "Sing With Me" program, alumni engagement) Ensure vocal development and musical growth across all ensembles Curriculum Development, Faculty Training & Strategic Vision Design and oversee a comprehensive, sequential choral curriculum across all ensembles, ensuring age-appropriate vocal, musical, and artistic development Establish clear learning objectives and benchmarks for each ensemble and level Train, mentor, and support teaching staff in instructional methods, rehearsal techniques, and culturally responsive teaching practices Lead professional development opportunities and provide ongoing feedback to faculty Foster consistency in teaching approach while encouraging individual teacher strengths Engage in long-range planning and goal casting to shape the artistic direction of the organization over multiple seasons Collaborate with leadership to align curriculum and programming with Glorystar's mission, growth goals, and community impact Evaluate program effectiveness and implement improvements based on student outcomes and organizational priorities Rehearsals & Performances Oversee rehearsal planning and instructional quality across all ensembles Prepare and supervise all major performances, including: Winter Concert Spring Concert Vocal Training Recital Fundraising and appreciation concerts Create detailed concert flowcharts, stage plans, and report times Coordinate with stage managers, technicians, and volunteers for performance execution Lead or delegate concert walkthroughs and rehearsals Auditions & Enrollment Plan and oversee auditions for new and returning singers Collaborate with administrative staff on enrollment timelines (e.g., Early Bird Registration) Review and communicate singer evaluations Staff Leadership & Collaboration Supervise and mentor teaching staff and conductors Lead regular staff meetings, including artistic planning and rehearsal debriefs Assign teaching responsibilities and collaborate on curriculum development Coordinate scheduling with administrative staff Program Operations Develop and finalize annual calendars in collaboration with staff and administration Ensure all music is ordered, distributed, and prepared for rehearsals Oversee inventory and materials (e.g., music library, "Journey Book") Communicate regularly with families, including welcome letters and program updates Events & Special Programs Plan and oversee participation in festivals such as the Maryland Young Voices Festival (MYVF), including: Repertoire and solo selection Rehearsal schedules Logistics, registration, and chaperones Organize retreats, bonding events, and enrichment opportunities Develop and implement outreach programs such as "Sing With Me" Coordinate alumni engagement and reunion events Community & Family Engagement Collaborate with the Parent Support Association (PSA) on concerts, receptions, and volunteer coordination Support communications, including concert announcements and news releases Identify and pursue public performance opportunities Engage alumni and broader community in Glorystar programming Administrative & Strategic Responsibilities Partner with the Executive Director on budgeting and program planning Contribute to fundraising initiatives, including benefit concerts Participate in end-of-year evaluations and strategic planning Qualifications Master's degree in Music, Choral Conducting, Music Education, or related field with equivalent experience Demonstrated experience conducting youth choirs and working with children and adolescents Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy and age-appropriate repertoire Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills Experience in concert production and program management Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and volunteers Preferred Attributes Passion for youth development through music Ability to foster an inclusive, supportive, and high-expectation environment Experience with festivals, auditions, and multi-ensemble programs Strong community-building and relationship management skills Language skills in English and Chinese (speaking, writing, and reading) To apply, please provide the following: 1.
