Situated on a beautiful 13-acre campus nestled in the redwoods of Oakland's regional parks, Chabot Space & Science Center includes immersive exhibits, hands-on learning activities, science festivals, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and is home to the official NASA Ames Visitor Center. Chabot's research-level astronomical observatory, featuring three large scale telescopes, is the largest observatory complex free for regular public viewing in the Western United States. On-Call Oakland Space Academy Assistant Job Summary:
The On-Call Oakland Space Academy Assistant supports workforce development programming at Chabot Space & Science Center. This position assists in the execution of daytime, evening, and overnight events, inquiry teams, trainings, intensives, workshops, special programs, and offsite outreach. Duties include substitute teaching a Galaxy Explorers (GE) weekend inquiry team (Climate Technology, Digital Media, Engineering, etc.) or summer intensive, training GEs on OSA developed floor shift demonstration content, supervising GE floor shifts, assisting with OSA events and offsite outreach, and so on. The position works directly under the direction of the OSA Director or Workforce Development Program Manager and closely with other OSA staff, Team Leads, Science Associates, GEs (including GE interns and mentors), volunteers, and astronomers. Teaching experience is essential in this role. The person(s) in this position must be able to work with high school students from diverse backgrounds. Nights and weekends are required, and shifts may vary per week depending on program needs. This is an on-call position. Hours are based on programmatic and operational needs and are not guaranteed. Available shifts are posted for sign-up and may include daytime, evening, overnight, and weekend assignments. This position is not eligible for benefits. The position hours are based on Institutional needs and does not have a guaranteed amount of hours offered per week. This is a non-exempt position.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provide or assist in the delivery of OSA educational content in on-site and off-site settings including but not limited to substitute teaching inquiry team (climate technology, digital media, engineering) classes and intensive courses using OSA developed and approved lessons. Support Galaxy Explorers with program delivery, including supporting Galaxy Explorer Interns who are inquiry team teaching assistants and Galaxy Explorer mentors. Train Galaxy Explorers on OSA approved floor demonstration content and other trainings. Provide guidance, support, and training to Galaxy Explorers during floor shifts. Support offsite OSA outreach events. Assist in setting up and breaking down A/V components, furniture, signage, and other event equipment. Deliver science demonstrations, workshops, and hands-on activities for audiences of all ages. Participate in public programs, series programs, overnights, and other events as needed, working collaboratively with Guest Experience staff and other team members to support successful event operations. Organize, clean, and maintain supply inventories, storage areas, and office settings; resupply materials as needed and note when supplies are running low. Set up and serve at bar or meal service for guests when required. Inspect event spaces and equipment post-event for damage, cleanliness, and document issues to be addressed. Test presentations in advance on audio-visual equipment. Provide excellent customer service as an event host to clients and museum guests. Run preprogrammed Planetarium and laser shows. Provide on-going communication to other team members and supervisor on needs, opportunities, or feedback from visitors. Be attentive to safety and security. Be aware of emergency procedures. Participate in OSA and All-Staff meetings, trainings, and job shadowing as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Passion for science and working with diverse audiences, including young people. Comfortable sharing information with groups, especially high schoolers in grades 10-12. Comfortable working with people from diverse language and cultural backgrounds and diverse abilities. High level of professionalism and customer service skills when interacting with others. Ability to take initiative to support education programs. Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in team structures. Ability to quickly and accurately identify critical issues when making decisions or solving problems. Composure under pressure. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends..
Education and Experience:
High school diploma required; some college preferred. At least one year of part-time work experience in formal or informal education. Prior work with or interest in reaching communities underrepresented in science and science center settings strongly preferred. Conversant in a language other than English highly desired. Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all qualifications unless legal requirements apply.
