Part-Time Posting Detail Information Position Summary The Center for the Arts (CFA) at the University at Buffalo, part of the College of Arts and Sciences , is seeking a Theatrical Production Technician to join our team. This early-career, hands-on position is ideal for individuals with a foundational understanding of video projection who are eager to grow their technical skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. The CFA hosts a wide range of performances, productions, and events -spanning national tours, campus performances, academic programs, and community events. No two days are the same, offering valuable opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive team environment. The Theatrical Production Technician plays a key role in the technical execution of events, with a primary focus audio reinforcement, video projection, and multimedia systems. Responsibilities include the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and strike of audio-visual equipment, projection systems, digital playback systems, and multimedia technologies, while also assisting with lighting and general theatrical support as needed. Working closely with the Technical Director and production team, the technician helps ensure events run smoothly and safely, while also guiding student workers and over hire crews in effective production practices. Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the technical execution of a wide variety of events-including concerts, touring productions, dance performances, theatrical shows, academic activities, recitals, and special events-throughout all phases of production, from prep and load-ins to rehearsals, performances, and load-outs. Serve as a production technician with a focus on audio, video projection, and multimedia systems. Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and strike audio-visual and theatrical technology systems, including digital audio consoles, microphones, projection systems, video routing, playback systems and software (e.g. QLab), and Front of House audio support for presentations, screenings, performances, and live events. Provide general production support across sound, lighting, and staging, including basic audio setup and mixing, lighting hang and strike, scenic and soft goods handling, and fly system assistance. Provide general production support across audio, multimedia, projection, staging and lighting systems, including audio setup and operation, signal routing, projector alignment, video distribution, lighting hang and strike, event changeover support, scenic and soft goods handling, and fly system assistance. Assist with the maintenance, repair, and improvement of theatrical systems and facilities under the direction of the Technical Director and production staff. Help train and support student employees and over hire crews in safe and effective production practices. Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment across all production operations. Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented culture, and actively build technical skills through hands-on experience, mentorship, and ongoing professional development. Occasional evening and weekend availability may be needed based on departmental and program needs.

Minimum Qualifications Associates degree in technical theater or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience in lieu of a degree 1-2 years of prior hands-on experience in event or production environments, especially with video projection, audio-visual, lighting, or theatrical staging systems Foundational knowledge of video projection systems and playback software General understanding of technical theater practices and safety protocols Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and foster an inclusive, respectful, and safety-conscious environment Preferred Qualifications Bachelors degree in technical theater, live event production, or a related field. Experience with QLab, or other industry-standard playback and projection software Experience working in university, academic, or multi-venue arts facilities. Physical Demands Frequently moves, transports, or positions materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally ascends/descends an elevated mobile work platform.
