Job Description - Senior Art Director (2601465) Job Description Senior Art Director - ( 2601465 ) Position Information The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Communications Division is seeking a highly creative and strategic Senior Art Director to join the agency's in-house Creative Services team (CS). This position provides creative vision and strategic input for all agency media projects, ensuring consistency between designs and alignment with agency goals. This role is responsible for overseeing the accuracy, quality, consistency, and creative direction of visual and multimedia work produced for external audiences. The ideal candidate brings exceptional taste, strong design instincts, and a deep familiarity with contemporary visual culture and design trends, including social media and internet-driven trends. This position ensures that all creative materials align with strategic objectives and brand guidelines, and serves as a creative partner to leadership, designers, and multimedia producers --helping shape concepts, elevate execution, and ensure all creative work meets a high bar for quality, clarity, and impact. This role is not primarily production focused. Instead, it is accountable for creative oversight, visual standards, and direction across design and video, from concept through final delivery. The Senior Art Director should possess strong leadership skills, be able to take ownership of projects and mentor staff, leading consultation and collaboration with cross-functional teams to understand and communicate design requirements. The role should have a keen eye for design and visual aesthetics, and the proficiency in industry-standard technical design software necessary to create mockups, design references, and occasionally implement edits to content directly. Must possess enthusiasm for shaping visual identities and delivering impactful creative work.

Provides strategic creative leadership for design, video, and multimedia projects across Creative Services, including Design, Media Production, and Web Services. Serves as the primary creative authority for visual communications, guiding concept development through execution and final delivery across digital, social, video, print, and experiential channels. Ensures all creative work meets established brand standards, supports agency messaging objectives, and reflects strong aesthetic judgment, clarity, and relevance to modern audiences. Work requires contact with departmental managers, high-level executives, governmental/university officials and/or private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability the work product. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties:
Coordinates and maintains visual standards and brand consistency across Creative Services campaigns, projects, and channels, including digital, social, video, print, and experiential work. Serves as the primary reviewer and creative steward for visual and multimedia production proofs, ensuring work is compelling, on-brand, and well executed. Directs and develops creative concepts, visual approaches, and look and feel for campaigns and multimedia projects. Reviews and evaluates design, video, motion graphics, and post-production deliverables for quality, tone, alignment, and creative intent. Reviews video concepts, scripts, casting, and post-production outputs to ensure strong visual storytelling and alignment with agency goals. Collaborates with project managers, designers, media producers, copywriters, and stakeholders to align creative execution with timelines, objectives, and audience needs. Recommends creative solutions that elevate storytelling, solve communication challenges, and resonate culturally. Identifies risks, gaps, opportunities, and resource needs related to creative quality and execution. Presents creative concepts, ideas, and recommendations to project teams and leadership. Ensures accessibility standards are met across creative work and recommends improvements when needed. Supports development of creative processes, workflows, and quality standards. Provide creative vision and strategic input for agency media projects, ensuring consistency between designs and alignment with agency goals and brands. Coordinates the maintenance and management of design programs and components. Reviews and evaluate media designs and programs for accuracy and efficiency coverage. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

5 years of experience in graphic design, art direction, visual design, multimedia production or related experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Portfolio demonstrating strong visual judgment, creative leadership, and high‑quality work across various media Extensive knowledge of contemporary visual culture, design principles, visual communication, brand systems, creative direction, digital culture, design trends, audience behavior, and creative review processes across design and video Relevant certifications in design software or creative direction Experience working in an advertising agency; work with/in state government
