Position Summary The Ditch Rider is responsible for managing and delivering water to farmers and landowners and monitoring, and maintenance of irrigation canals, laterals, headgates, and related water delivery infrastructure. Primary duties include regulating headgates, measuring water flow, monitoring for leaks or damage and performing maintenance on canals and ditches. This position ensures accurate and equitable water distribution to water users in accordance with district policies, water rights, and delivery schedules. Essential Duties & Responsibilities During the water season (April-October), the Ditch Rider position is responsible for delivering water to their area or "ride." You will be on call 24/ 7 during the water season. You will work closely with the District's Water Master as well as its patrons. Work performed will involve ordering and delivering water, maintaining a good set of records, driving canal roadways, watching for problems, and reporting issues immediately. Removing all debris from the delivery system, keeping watch for muskrat activity. During the off-season (November-March), Ditch Riders will now be known as the concrete crew. Our tasks include replacing structures and gates, installing new ones, and preparing canals for water by burning canals and laterals. Water Delivery & Regulation
- Operate and adjust headgates, checks, turnouts, and control structures
- Deliver water according to assigned schedules and water orders
- Monitor flows to ensure proper distribution and prevent loss or overflow
- Measure and record water deliveries when required Canal & Facility Maintenance
- Inspect canals, laterals, pipelines, and drains for leaks, obstructions, or damage
- Remove debris, sediment, and vegetation to maintain proper flow
- Perform minor repairs on gates, structures, and ditch systems
- Report major maintenance issues to supervisor Monitoring & Compliance
- Patrol assigned routes daily during irrigation season
- Identify and report unauthorized use, waste, or tampering
- Ensure compliance with district rules and applicable regulations Communication & Customer Interaction
- Communicate with water users regarding delivery schedules and issues
- Respond to questions or concerns in a professional manner
- Coordinate with office staff and management regarding changes or problems Safety
- Follow all safety procedures and use proper protective equipment
- Report unsafe conditions immediately
- Operate district vehicles and equipment safely Seasonal Expectations Extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during irrigation season. On-call availability may be required. Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Basic mechanical aptitude Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in irrigation systems, agriculture, or water distribution
- Knowledge of canal systems, headgates, and flow measurement
- Equipment operation experience (ATV, pickup, small machinery) Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain
