Full Job Description Basic Functions:
The Observatory Presenter will present Observatory programs for a variety of audiences, maintain Observatory equipment and facilities, research and recommend improvements to the Observatory, and respond to public inquiries. Duties & Res p onsibilities The following are the duties and responsibilities of anObservatory Presenter:
Present Observatory programs for a variety of audiences Conduct and present regular public, school, and member observing programs (including Urban Astronomy Workshop and Sungazing Saturdays). Supervise and train Observatory volunteers. Always be responsible for the safe operation of the Observatory and the safety of visitors, especially ensuring safe solar observing techniques Maintain Observatory equipment and facilities Work with Planetarium and Facilities staff to keep Observatory, telescope, dome, equipment, and surrounding area in safe working order. Be knowledgeable and proficient in basic repair and maintenance requirements as needed. Research and recommend improvements to the Observatory Research, recommend, and implement improvements to programming and equipment to enhance the public's use and enjoyment of the Observatory. Visit and/or become familiar with local public observatories, astronomy clubs, and vendors. Respond to public inquiries Answer astronomy/telescope questions via phone and e-mail. Connect the public to local resources such as amateur astronomy clubs.Education:
Bachelor's degree desired. A degree in astronomy or another science-related field is preferred.Ex p erience:
Some experience with telescope operation, preferably for public audiences; some public presentation experience in a museum, school, or other setting. Knowled g e, Skills, and Abilities Knowled g e of: Night sky, astronomy, and space science. Telescope operation, care, and maintenance.Abilit y to:
Work with various MSC departments to accomplish goals. Make independent decisions in the best interest of the team.Skills:
Public presentation and speaking for a wide range of audiences. Familiarity with computers, astronomical, and audio-visual software.Basic Re q uirements:
