Job Description:

Raritan Valley Community College's Planetarium has an opening for a Part-Time Student Worker. The Planetarium Student Worker will provide general office support for the department.

Essential Duties:

Interact with school groups and public visitors in the exhibit hall. Be able to explain primary exhibits - ones used in the scavenger hunt. Seat school groups quickly and safely into the theater. Sell tickets to public shows. Sell gift shop items. Replenish gift shop stock. Make photocopies of show tickets, scavenger hunts. Take tickets for public shows.

Introduce / Welcome

visitors to the theater. Introduce and run recorded shows and laser shows. Present a 10-20 minute star ID program for every season Start up and shut down theater. Create Instagram posts and stories for the Planetarium's social media. Answer phones, check messages, and return phone calls. Take public show reservations. Welcome school groups and take admission fees. Be comfortable doing several hands-on activities to use with the public on Astronomy Day, Girl Scout programs, and for other special events. Make simple programming buttons to run live shows. Decorate halls for holidays.

Advanced:

Make complex buttons for shows, including programming new shows.

Advanced:

Create laser song modules using Pangolin software.

Advanced:

Operate the 3M Observatory's telescope, interact with visitors.

Advanced:

Use 8" Dobsonian telescopes with public visitors. Other duties as needed.

Job Requirements:

Current full-time or part-time RVCC student.

Flexible schedule:

weekday mornings and weekend work. General knowledge of astronomy or willingness to learn.

Microsoft Office Suite including:

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook Comfortable with public speaking. Excellent customer service skills & strong organizational and prioritization abilities. Interest in working with children. Prior technical experience a plus. Prior experience with Banner / Argos a plus.
