Job Description

Job Summary The Goshen News, located in Goshen, Indiana is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and community-focused Sports Editor to lead our award-winning local sports coverage. This position oversees comprehensive coverage of ten area high schools , as well as University of Notre Dame athletics , delivering timely, engaging, and accurate sports journalism across print, digital, social media, and video platforms. The ideal candidate is an exceptional storyteller with strong news judgment, a passion for local sports, and the leadership skills to produce compelling content that celebrates student-athletes, coaches, and the communities we serve. This is an outstanding opportunity to make a meaningful impact while leading sports coverage that readers rely on every day. Responsibilities Plan, assign, write, and edit comprehensive coverage of ten area high schools and Notre Dame athletics. Develop compelling feature stories, game coverage, breaking news, athlete profiles, and in-depth analysis. Edit stories for clarity, accuracy, AP style, grammar, and journalistic excellence prior to publication. Coordinate with photographers and videographers to capture outstanding photography and video from sporting events. Produce and oversee multimedia content, including highlight videos, interviews, podcasts, and social media reels. Manage the sports section across print, digital, mobile, and social media platforms to maximize audience engagement. Maintain relationships with athletic directors, coaches, student-athletes, schools, and community organizations. Ensure all reporting is thoroughly researched, fact-checked, and adheres to the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Monitor local, regional, and national sports news to identify stories that impact our readers. Assist in planning seasonal special publications, including high school sports previews, postseason coverage, and commemorative editions. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Proven experience covering sports in a newspaper, digital news organization, or similar media environment. Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a strong command of AP style. Experience with sports photography, videography, and multimedia storytelling. Proficiency with content management systems, social media platforms, and digital publishing tools. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required by the sports calendar. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with staff and building relationships throughout the community.
