As the No. 1 station in Philadelphia for almost 45 years, 6abc Action News delivers local news, information, traffic, and weather to more than 3 million homes. WPVI serves nearly 7 million people, including those who reside in the Delaware Valley, an area encompassing southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware. In the past year, Action News has won 2,633 out of 2,662 newscasts in households for a winning percentage of 99.8%.
WPVI/6ABC
is seeking a digitally savvy Assignment Editor who thrives in fast-paced newsroom environments, owns breaking news, and knows how to identify a compelling story before it trends. This role is a critical hub of our newsroom where they will help coordinate coverage, direct resources, and ensure accurate, timely information is delivered across broadcast, digital, and social platforms. Responsibilities Lead daily and breaking news coverage by assigning reporters and crews and coordinating newsroom resources. Develop and maintain a strong network of reliable news sources, including public safety agencies, community contacts, and field reporters. Skillfully manage and evaluate tip calls, emails, and digital submissions using sound news judgment to verify information, identify emerging stories, and determine appropriate coverage priorities across platforms. Identify, develop, and generate original, high‑impact stories that reflect and serve the diversity of our audience. Serve as a central point of contact for news tips, public inquiries, and requests from community partners and organizations. Collaborate closely with news managers, reporters, producers, digital teams, and fellow assignment editors to execute coverage plans. Maintain strong social media awareness, using platforms to track developing stories and enhance newsroom responsiveness. Create and edit content for 6abc.com, the station app, and social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X. Produce and edit video content for both broadcast and digital distribution. Deliver timely, accurate updates during breaking news and major events across all platforms Basic Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of assignment desk experience. Strong team player who interacts in a positive, ethical, empathetic, and productive way with other employees and the general public. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Flexible and available to work various shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays Required Education High school diploma or equivalent Preferred Education College Degree The hiring range for this position in Philadelphia is $68,600 to $91,900 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
