You'll be expected to help build our reputation as the Upper East Side's news leader by breaking neighborhood news, holding the powerful accountable, and enterprising engaging community stories, while also playing a hands-on role in shaping the quality and direction of our coverage. Our ideal candidate is a driven, self-starting journalist and editor with significant professional newsroom experience and the instincts to make fast, sound editorial decisions. Three years of prior daily newsroom experience is required. Candidates must be based in New York City. Photography skills are a plus. About Us Upper East Site is a fast-growing, independent and non-partisan local news source known for its hard-hitting coverage of the Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods of Manhattan's Upper East Side. Responsibilities Breaking news on your beat Generating original story ideas daily Contributing to a total newsroom output of 14 or more published pieces per week Writing and producing original articles, including enterprise stories and breaking news Delivering clean, publication-ready copy that requires minimal editing Producing articles independently in WordPress, bringing each piece to publication-ready status Copy editing, proofreading, and fact-checking submitted content prior to publication Reviewing headlines, metadata, and images for accuracy, standards compliance, and SEO Serving as acting Editor in the Managing Editor's absence, including making publication and breaking news decisions Managing the editorial workflow and calendar in the Managing Editor's absence Communicating with contributors and freelancers, fielding pitches and providing editorial feedback Overseeing the corrections process when acting as Editor Collaborating with our team of journalists Promoting published work through social media About You Strong news instinct and sound editorial judgment Impeccable ethics Demonstrated ability to edit clearly and efficiently under deadline Experience making independent publication decisions Ability to build and foster positive relationships with the community Familiarity with the Upper East Side Team player who works collaboratively Compensation The Deputy Editor position starts at $65,000/year. Benefits include a health insurance stipend, 10 days paid vacation, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and 8 paid holidays.
